My thoughts exactly, and I can relate. A while back I am sitting there in a meeting, bitching about how I can't find a job and blah-bud-de blah.....and later that night I looked at my ridiculous blonde mohawk, huge plugs and labret and just said "Fuck it", and shaved down to peach fuzz and took the jewelry out. Whatdya know? People actually take me seriously now AND I am working.

I never wanted to grow up either. Drugs didn't help, but either way my attitude sucked. I know the rebel attitude is addicting, but it truly got me nowhere. I can still be a non-conformist without putting on a fake exterior. I always justified it as "an extension of myself", but that was a big poser-filled lie. I was hiding.....

It is way easier to just be "me" now, without having to worry if a hair is out of place, or if someone has bigger earrings than me.

No offense to those who sport extreme looks.....I love you all. :)

Fuck it.

Haha. My mum has black and purple hair, and she currently has two jobs. :D

IOne of them is making latex moulds for movies and things, which is pretty awesome. 8)

My family has always been weird, so I guess I'd be slightly null to it. I liked the skullet cause it looked different.

I totally understand wanting a mature look and such though. :D I think Dev looks fine with either do. xD

I'm sure that any child loves their father regardless of what hairstyle he dons.

Personally I'd reject the notion that looking different denotes a lack of maturity, unless you're looking different specifically to get attention, rather than because you like it. At the end of the day, one style choice is as arbitrary as any other, I don't see why people should feel the need to conform to someone elses idea of how they should look. If looking a certain way makes you happy, then go for it.

To be honest, I don't understand the need to be taken seriously by people that you don't care about. My personal view, is that if someone judges me on my appearance, then they're not worth knowing in the first place. It's a good way to filter out people that you have zero interest in getting to know.

It's not the 1950s any more, it's perfectly possible to look a bit different, and still find a decent job. (Although to be honest, this was part of the reason I went into the games industry. Fuck having to wear a suit and tie to work every day)

My view on social norms, is that when being pressured to conform to some norm that you normally wouldn't, you should ask yourself why is this norm there in the first place? If it's there for a good reason, then I'll follow it, if it's there just because people generally like to conform to the norms of a social group, then it's not really worth following for the sake of it.

I think that if you need other peoples' approval in order to validate yourself, then you're probably not a very secure person, and if anything I'd argue that defining yourself based on what other people think is actually less mature.

Pretty sure that whatever he looks like (or however "weird" his image is), having a rockstar for a dad is nothing to be ashamed of 8)

I do agree though, he does look better with his hair shorn, and it suits his new sound more. Skullet dev was "scary dev", bald dev seems to portray a mellower, more mature image.

Lol awesome pic :D

I can't beleive that my useless thread turned into somewhat of a discussion about social norms, jobs and the like. I have no idea as to why a created it (and believe me, I'm not stuck in the past), I must have had one of those "that would be AWESOME!" moments. I look back and think "damn, I was really that bored to actually suggest something to The Great Dev about his hair?"...wow

If it is at all worth thinking about, I have long hair and wear a suit every day. Not got a job, just wear a suit. People look at me in a confused fashion. I've walked into shops and people have confused me for a manager, despite the long hair. I dunno. I lost my point when I reached this part of the post...

BUT YES! Long hair and a suit. Whoot.

I don't know if this is what you mean -
but sometimes it is nice to cover up the tattoos, and (well that's as 'extreme' as I get :P ) and just be Catlin. Sometimes it's nice to have people look at your face instead of your arms. Other times, it's fun to flash ink. But in the professional realm, it's just the way of the world that people are expected to look 'presentable," 'normal' and what not. That's not a personal opinion necessarily, but it's just the way most things work.

But, I have to say, Townsend's hair can look really pretty

Nice shine to it, full of body, flowing

I saw pics EXACTLY like that, and it made me post this. Haha.
I LOVE his hair like that. So that's really the only point of this thread, to see if had has a problem with it being like that or not.

His hair looks really cool like that, I agree.

And that observation isn't meant to diss the bald head, that looks cool as well. But since we were talking about SYL hair...

This one is cool - it's long!

Oh! One more! I just had to put this up, this was the one I was originally looking for.

Whatever. So I've noticed his awesome hair past and present. You've all put thought into it too, don't judge

Wow, what a reaction. It is a very personal subject I suppose. And who knows, I may put some smaller plugs back in or something, but I just don't feel it at the moment.....kinda like Devin I guess.

When I would talk to people or apply for a job, I would always notice people NEVER connected with my eyes, and it was really frustrating. I am big on eye contact.

But, the biggest issue was just that I was plain not into the rebellious look anymore. I am incredibly narcissistic, and it was really stressful getting that damn mohawk perfect every time. The less I care about what I look like, the more energy I have to be a better person to people and myself.

So yea, no conformity here, just personal preference.

I love my hair, it allows me to strike an epic wind pose.

Still, it can get in the way sometimes, and wearing a hairband whilst sparring can be as unnerving as not. I fully understand why people decide to grow or cut their hair, and the multitude of ideas therein, however I still feel one overriding question remains: Does it suit me? Personally, I feel that I look odd with short hair due to the shape of my head, but I admit there may come a time when I find I would prefer it short, maybe due to the reasons previously stated concerning maturity (although, personally, I feel this isexplaining something akin to keeping one's affairs private instead of wearing one's heart on one's sleeve, so to speak), or plausibly because I manage to find a style that works that I wish to experiment with. As much as I consider the latter rather unlikely at this precise period, I am also not dismissive of the idea to change if I feel I wish to should the urge come on me, even after a decade of getting my hair to this point (long story).

tl;dr? - A person must be open to internal and external change, whether sudden or gradual. That which becomes rigid, breaks, so be water, my friend.
