From the sounds of things, Deconstruction will be your last really heavy thing. Time for me to cry. Not that I have any problem with the light music, and based on Ki it's better than ever, but there's just so few good harsh vocalists. Of course I'm glad I watched that interview and I probably wouldn't want you to just do more SYL anyway.

Hey Dev, I have a question from those of us who know nothing about writing music. Or maybe just know nothing at all. 8)

If all the songs on Addicted must have a length of 3:33, doesn't that limit what you can do with the individual songs? So maybe you have an idea on how to increase the overall power of one of these tracks but to do so the song would end up at 4:01 or something and so you scrap the idea. In this example the "upgraded" track at 4:01 would still fit the theme of the record (pop songs mocking pop songs) so why not do that? Intuitively (again, from the perspective of a lay person) it seems like the rule should have been more general like "No epic songs" or something similar. Know what I mean? Can you tell us anything more about how the writing went and how it works out?

Edit: Maybe I should re-post this in the "addicted" thread? Obviously I put it here as a reaction to the interview which is a current sub-topic.

Ok, thanks for the answer, is sad to hear it, but, well, lucky is not for all.

By the way Dev i saw the interview, and damn, the idea of addicted was hilarious,an advice if you want to do a ridiculous pop record (as Nickelblack) put a stupid cover in the front, like a guy looking a potato, but the potato has to got written an "x" on, so everybody say "oh my god, so profound, an x in a potato", and finally ask $30 or more for the record. That's the way those fuckers steal money.

Hey Devin, Ki is awesome and I can't wait to get my copy in June! I have a small favor to ask of you or anyone else who can help. I'm doing a little poster of you for my ad design class, and it has to be using nothing but text, no pictures images, shapes or anything. So I'm trying to use the lyrics at the end of the song Ki as the body for the poster and the words the "voices" are chanting as the effects that surround him, well you. I wanted to know if you could tell me the correct lyrics for the end bit where you are singing all operatic like. This is what I have figured out so far

Devy: So we fall at once again I know yes i know we all fall away
Voices: you can sing it when you're sad you can sing it when you're mad you can sing it when you shower come on mother F****** you've got it (x20) everybody knows

Voices: you can sing it when you're sad you can sing it when you're mad you can sing it when you shower come on mother F****** you've got it (x20) everybody knows

All help is greatly appreciated.

also there's a large bit of the voices that I have yet to figure out at all, All i can make out is "all i wanted was a little time true" or something like that

That was a great interview. Lots of great stuff. I'm looking forward to the whole series of albums.

I was a bit confused when he said that the topic of Deconstruction was going to be about how we as humans don't really understand "things that were made out to be cool, like sex, or violence, or drugs, or chaos, or science". As someone who's spent a lot of time studying science, i thought the inclusion of science in that list was a bit striking, not because we understand science, I'll be the first one to say science is more about what we don't know than what we do know, but that i have a hard time placing science in a list with things that he's obviously considering to be destructive. Yes, I understand that science can be very destructive, but we Americans have (hopefully) learned the hard way in the past eight years that ignoring science can be just as destructive. The other thing I have to say about that is, in my personal experience, science has never been made out to be cool...

Beyond that, it was very cool to hear devin talk about his stuff. And I can't say I've ever heard someone say in an interview:

"I truly enjoy taking pictures of dog shit"
