Is it worth me signing up, has Dev written anything yet?

Dev you talking to us on here is basically the same as twitter, but I guess you could reach out to more people on Twitter.

I'm http://www.twitter.com/Pandorly. I registered a few weeks ago, don't really get the point of it. Nevertheless, befriend me if you dare...

I think people are missing the point about twitter.

Hype? sure
Overrated? yep
Mostly superficial and boring? Damn right
Awsome concept which allows you to summarize loads of content, be "closer" to great artists/personalities and make zero cost publicity? Hellyeah!

It would be a perfect tool for street teaming, IMHO.

Ok, sorry 'bout the rant (and crappy english)...just following mr. townsend

I try to think of it in dynamics. Like for likes. Twitter seems to give a situation where you replace the equal opportunity of the natural internet with private companies spreading a distribution layer between the content creator and the user.

It's why the music industry can tell people what to buy and restrict the distribution of alternative information.

It turns a group of individuals with similar ideals into a group of followers with an excuse not to be thinking for themselves. For me it's a reminder of why there should be the freedom of the internet on one hand and the no brain activity of watching TV on the other. Neither should become the other.

People should take webstandards that promote the use of any type of writing instrument with any type of paper. Not proprietary pens matched with propriety paper types.

As humans we need a next step of communication and that should be above business. The market can argue over feature sets and taste but should never be tolerated in situations where they prevent the basic action of communicating 'new media' between us humans.

we need a basic online freedom even if it's the equivalent to a sheet of toilet paper and a stubby old pencil in old terms.

or summat like that.

heh

Yeah, you have your own independent distribution layer right here, why give a slice of your soul to another distributor who are frankly producing money from no creative input. A bit like insurance companies and banks. They're short circuiting a natural system that we all crave but can't remember for why, then we just go "oh cool, twitter" I'll do that instead cos it's too tricky to think. The 'No brain activity' that belongs in TV land not on the internet. (and yeah, I think the TV should be as pimped for as much as people are willing to sit in front of it and it's on off switch.)

All you need to do now is work out is how much of your soul will you sell for the prosperity of your art. (here or twitter(or other))

Personally I think you've made some very courageous and admirable decisions as you are now.

I don't think there is an actual™ correct answer.

Facebook is way toooooo time consuming... Twitter is a much quicker way to keep in touch, enabling you to have more of a real life... whatever one of those is :?

Signed up cuz I'm a follower I guess.........

What a demeaning thought, I just noticed that.

Hey Twitter! Can I be a "leader" instead of a "follower"? Anyway, it is a cool place to post very random thoughts. It is kind of like talking to yourself. Wait, I do that anyway!

I don't understand what people's gripe with Twitter is, without ever giving it a try first. When I first heard of the concept, I didn't see the point either but now that I've used it for a while, I quite like it. It's nothing what I expected, people do not describe what their poop looks like (sorry Dev) and if they do and it bothers you, don't follow them!

It's really not about people feeling self-important, it does not stimulate 'herd behaviour'. It's about communicating with people you know or who share an interest.

When posting a Tweet, you're allowing people to read what you are dealing with at that particular moment - and most importantly interact with you, communicate with you. Provide ideas, thoughts, tips, jokes. And it allows me to interact with other people in the same way.

And I think it's great to know that Dev is trying out new strings, that Switzerland has a much more active metal community than Textures expected, that Oceansize have about 30 songs to compile an EP, that my classmate missed the bus for the 5th time in a week, that my brother is busy with school and not coming home this weekend, that Mogwai is playing in my city in a few weeks, and so on. All things that I would have found out one way or another, but now they're neatly delivered to my desktop for me to take notice when it suits me. I don't have to handle phone calls and text messages, people IM-ing me when I'm busy, scavenge blogs and websites, hear rumours via via from friends. What I want to know is there, what I don't want to know is not there.

And in the same way I think that other people will be happy to hear from me that Ki is available for pre-order, that their website isn't working properly, to hear a compliment about their photograph, that the soccer game between Liverpool and Chelsea is worth watching, that there's a nice festival full of local bands next weekend, or even that I can't make pancakes. For the very same reasons.

It's not dumb, stupid, shit(e), crap, 'cheaper assed facebook', 'no-brain activity'. It's convenient and fun.

I agree completely, no one is forcing YOU to speak shit about your life, if you find a good website, show it off there, if you take a sweet photo, same, if you've just been to the best damn gig of your life, that is news.

It's better than facebook because it's not bogged down in terrible applications, there is no profile, it's just an awesome form of communication. In fact, I broke my cardinal rule, it's nothing like facebook, aside from the status updates, if you use it like that, you will get nothing from it, if you are original in your thinking, it's useful beyond measure, already I feel like ten times the photographer I was a few months ago because I am following the right people on it!

I am not sure what I am doing with it, but there you go

I am following Dev and thanks to Pandorly Dylan Moran also.

I will not comment on whether Twitter is good or bad since I have been on there for a total of about 9 hours.
