One problem with downloading is that I've been doing it for at least 5 years now. I've heard so much fucking music, so much of it sounding so similar, that I clamor for something new sounding, something different. I can get tired of a good album (read: Nachtmystiums new album) in a week, whereas when I was younger I could listen to a Linkin Park album for months.

There's only really about 5 artists that I can listen to without getting bored, which is all of Devin's early stuff + Ziltoid, Subterranean Masquerade, Kyuss (welcome to sky valley)... .... fuck I can't even think of anyone else I listen to regularly, and this shit has been going on for months.

So, in short, thank you Devin for putting out quality fucking music that doesn't sound like anyone else out there. You've saved me from being bored of music altogether.

With Zitloid Devin became more popular (as I think), and if there's so many people downloading Ki, is a good sign, many people will buy it as well.

I've listened to the whole album front to back about twelve times now and I like it more and more. A few gripes though; there's several times where the song builds up in a fantastic manner and it sounds awesome. For example, at the end of Coast. It could progress from the awesome riff and beat type thing going on (I'm not a musician, fuck knows the terminology) but instead it abruptly cuts off into a guitar chill-solo thing. There's also the end of Ki; absolutely amazing, it's probably the most inspiring and epic minute in music history but it seems to go nowhere, again abruptly morphing into more quiet chill-out guitar.

All said and done, however, I believe it was created and produced in this manner for a reason. As the first of four albums I think Devin's going for an album that genuinely teases you and gives you a glimpse of what's to come. By cutting these heavy (well, heavy by this album's standard) build-ups if you will, he's leaving us hanging, begging, needing more. It's frustrating and exciting at the same time, making it utterly addictive. Well, at least for me.

Highlights of the album for me so far: A Monday / Coast, Gato (love the woman's singing voice), Ain't Never Gonna Win..., Trainfire (SEX SEES SEVENTEEN YEAR OOOOOOOLD!), Ki and Quiet Riot. Fuck, it's the whole album.

Love it.

As far as 'spirituality' and religion goes, I try to distance myself as far away from it as possible. The reason everyone's so hyped up about whether to feel this way about a certain thing is due to spirituality and religion; it causes far more pain, hurt and anguish than anything else I can think of, bar drugs. I've been completely devoid of religion and spiritual nonsense my whole life and I am a very happy chappy.

Live life for yourself and your family, not some fictional characters created by power-hungry monks striving for social order and dominance.

Summed up: Fuck it, make rockin' music, rock out to rockin' music and have a good fucking time because life's far too short to worry about that crap!

Yeah, those blue balls moments were on purpose, sorry...

It's like when the manic rises, and you say 'no fucking way dude'

Thats actually one of the main points of Ki.

Well you've lured us into having no choice but to buy the next three albums in order to satiate our desire to get our groove on. Shrewd business tactics! But yeah, great work, a fantastic introduction.

If I had any photoshop skills, I'd photoshop devins face onto a shrew, due to that unfortunate mispelling. Alas, my artistic abilities are roughly equivalent to those of a retarded snail.

Yeah, spent the day thinking about it. Your support is awesome.

I had money problems this morning and freaked out.

Downloading is fine, and actually probably helps me.

Sorry for the rant.

It is a difficult situation though. As a musician (on a very modest level !) I know how it feels regarding the downloading thing.
On the one hand it's nice to see that people are interested. On the other hand it feels wrong that people don't feel that it's worth a little money. Sometimes people blame album prices but many spend a lot more going out during one weekend.

For example the latest EP that we made. I put a lot of time and effort in the mixing and mastering besides doing vocals, lead/rhythm electric guitar, acoustic guitar and lyrics. The end result even feels like a small part of yourself in a way, for me at least.

Eventually I send it to a site for a review and what do I see less than a day later? That the thing is on a request page of a torrent site, linking to that original interview. It's maybe hard to see this from a non-musician point of view. But it feels a bit weird anyway to see this after having put many days and nights (and a lot of soul :P) of hard work in it. Though it's great in a way too that someone seemed so eager.

Now I'm not claiming that I've never downloaded anything myself of course but it feels kind of like a double edged sword when you create music. Especially if you don't have a lot of capital from a big label backing you up. It's not about the money itself but investing lots of time in something and then losing a lot of money in the end kind of takes away motivation of course.

But what is definitely much worse is that I saw my stuff (and that of thousands of other bands) on a Chinese site where people had to pay to be a member and have access to downloads. So this means that they actually stole the music AND then sell it on top of it. Which is very different from regular downloading of course. Since some of those "regular downloaders" did buy some merchandise eventually and showed up at a concert I've noticed.

Devin, I must say I am totally flabbergasted about your 'down to earth'-opinion about downloading. I very well appreciate that from a musician!

I just want to make the following equation:

Lars Ullrich (Metallica drummer) screamed like a baby to stop people from downloading and I think that turned out the wrong way. I don't give a fuck about Metallica having less profit from their music, because they don't need the money at all!

I think you are TOO KIND to us :P and I think you will earn enough respect from that so that enough people are actually going to buy the album.
I am one of those persons.

All my best wishes for you and the family!

I heard a promo and was like "Dude, I need to go play Maniac Mansion now." It sucked because the only system I have it for is the mac, which isn't a laptop. So I had to find a way to run it on my Nintendo DS. Just totally showed the Slimy Meteor fucker what's what. Now if you're wondering what the hell this has to do with Ki... allow me to elaborate. Maniac Mansion was developed by Lucasfilm games. George Lucas made Star Wars. Star Wars featured Yoda. Yoda was voiced by Frank Oz. Frank Oz was a Muppeteer. The Muppets worked with John Denver. John Denver has a song that goes "Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy." Ki makes me happy.
Might seem a bit dorky but it's honest, which seems appropriate for this album. Love it, hate it. Whatever. Just listen honestly. It's so not full of shit it deserves that. You know?

Oh and Dev thanks. 2008 sucked. 2009... I feel a lot younger getting lost in Ki like I did with that Japanese promo of Biomech Tracy passed me waaay back when. Just takes me to this fantastic peaceful place full of laughter, blue balls, and Froud's concept art for the Dark Crystal.
Ever check out his Worlds of the Dark Crystal book? Fucking killer shit! Dissects the setting of the movie like an arachaelogist discovering the planet.
If you haven't and you hit the east coast again... most of the New Englandish crew who met through Strapping have moved or divorced. However, me, Katie, and a bottle of wine will always be at the ready to sit down, chat, and look at pretty pictures.

Hey Devin, I have been reading through your posts, and even though you have apologized and all, I don't think an apology is needed. I completely understand your frustration. However, I think that we need to get a pre-order link going soon, because I am sure that the amount of overwhelming SUPPORT your receive through that may well help restore your faith in us. We love you, and when reading through these posts, nearly everyone here is ready to buy it now, and would probably put in a pre-order for the massive box set at the end too! Myself and all of my friends are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to buy merch, albums, artwork...whatever you give us! So keep the faith a little longer, and I think we may surprise you :D.
