Being a good songwriter is better than being a "good" guitarist in my opinion.

i personally find him an EXCELENT songwriter. But i'm kind of a fanboy since i'm a kid, so...
And cmon, the man is awesome onstage. I tend to make all the faces along with "singing" the guitar parts when i listen to his stuff, so i can't blame him for doing so while he PLAYS them

I'm just not impressed by guitar playing as much as I am song writing. Now there are guys out there like Justin King and Bob Zabek who absolutely blow me away in terms of both guitar playing and song writing. Also groups like Rodrigo Y Gabriela.

Guitar playing like Vai's impressed me for a little while, but I quickly got over that once I discovered Meshuggah and Opeth and realized music can be so much more than just some fancy guitar work.

Plus I still put Satriani above Vai...especially in terms of song writing.

EDIT: Show me something Vai did that tops this :

Yeah, I've heard before that he's kind of shitty person - but if one can play like him, I dunno, that's pretty impressive.
I just can't resist that face. I really can't. Not intending to sound shallow or anything.

Right on!
His guitar face is pretty funny, but he's rocking out!! Can't blame him at all! Anyways, your avatar is awesome. I think it's the hair blowing that really makes it for me

I've never seen what was such a big deal about Steve Vai. His playing is "fancy," but it seems uninspired and over-wanked. And his songwriting has always come across as dull and predictable to me. I guess he's just not my thing.

I think of Vai like I think of Petrucci--in the right setting, he could do some awesome things, but for the most part he comes across as big-headed and not all that special, musically. Proficient? Yes. Good? I tend not to think so.

Anyway, I'm way off topic.

You put it better than I did. And I'm glad I'm not the only one around here who finds Vai/Petrucci boring.

Looove Steve Vai. I've seen him twice: once with the G3 (Vai, Satriani & Petrucci), and a couple summers ago during the Sound Theories tour. Just phenominal. The G3 was extra special because Billy Sheehan, Tony MacAlpine & Virgil Donati were with him. BLISS! :D

I've never thought Vai as cocky. A couple of my friends went backstage during the G3 to meet up with Portnoy, and they both said Vai was as nice as could be. Very friendly.

BTW, I found Satriani to be quite boring, and I enjoy his albums.

Back on topic (sort of) - my Pippin as a puppy.

It's kinda lumpy in that pic though, only had it done about 2 hours ago, and it's swelled up quite a bit (Unsurprisingly.) I already want more. :P

I won't deny it did hurt quite a bit. Mostly (funnily enough) going across the spine bit. It's bearable, but it is rather uncomfortable to say the least. When it got round to the sides, that wasn't quite so bad, but it felt like err... really hot if that makes sense. Like a hot biro pen dragging across your skin or something. Not quite as painful as I thought, but it wasn't exactly a nice stroll through the park either. :P

It's quite funny though, because you can feel the buzzing of the needles in your head. :P

Sorry, kinda babbled a little there haha. Thanks though :D I'll post a picture again when it's not quite so swollen. :P

i know what you mean, it does feel hot. The outline hurts the worst, and then the shading and colors are just mostly annoying.

That's a daring place for a first tatt - but it looks really good! It's completely true that they're addictive. What'cha planning next? You should find that it won't bother you as much as the first - after I had the guitar on my spine the rose I had done on my shoulder didn't really hurt at all. :)

Really? I didn't mind the outline much, it was when it got blocked it in I was like "Awww man... This is NOT a comfortable feeling" XD

Heehee, thanks Stella! :D Yeah that tattooist said he was impressed that I stood the tattoo so well, considering it was my first, heehee! To be honest, I amazed myself :P

I'm not sure what I'm planning next, I have wanted a pair of wings for a long amount of time, but I just haven't found a pair that would 'suit' and I'm not having much luck drawing either, so I might skip on that one. I'd quite like something revolved around music and ying-yangs/balance type stuff, but thats going to be a mission as that would be over my hip and maybe spreading onto the rib cage. That I imagine is going to hurt a fair bit. :P
