I dont get mac error msgs, like theres nothing you can do and they just shut down, atleast on a pc you can wing your way around a problem sometime. Maybe i'm forgetting that Macs are the standerd now and pc users just are savy about things.

Mainly because to a non-technical user, technical information about why your computer has just stopped working reads as "HOLY FUCK YOU HAVE JUST BROKEN 1 GRANDS WORTH OF MACHINERY... HERE'S A MASSIVE LIST OF INTIMIDATING RANDOM NUMBERS AND LETTERS JUST IN CASE I'VE NOT MADE IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT COMPUTERS ARE FOR EXPERTS ONLY. P.S. FUCK YOU". It's very off-putting to those kind of people.

Nerds like me on the other hand want as much technical information about the crash as possible, as it can allow them to potentially work around it. e.g. If it was the graphics driver that caused the machine to bluescreen, then that's useful information. Error screens that don't give information are the equivilent of that non-technically minded relative that every nerd has, that just tells them that their computer is "Broken", but then fails to elaborate on anything that would allow said nerd to fix it. (The solution to this is to pretend to know less about computers than you actually do )

Thats my biggest love for PC's, their upgradeability!(yes i made that word up)

I love that you can just go purchase new parts and make everything so much better!

It all comes down to this:

OPERATING SYSTEM.

The best computer in the world sucks with a shitty operating system.

The shittiest computer built will run well if it has a decent OS.

I happen to need both. I have a MacPro. It's like a $5k rig, and it is fucking phenomenal. You can't deny it. Don't waste your finger muscles.

Haha if anything Mac guys are 10 times as defensive of their systems. Most mac guys diss pc's to no end. I'd personally love to have a mac if I could fucking afford a decent one. I have made a pc that is more than twice as powerful as any mac in my price range...This is why I love pc's though.

so with you on all of that bro, i'd rather know whats going on so you can work your way around it. STILL for production (this thread is about production isnt it?!) I find that when something goes wrong with audio hardware or software, it doesnt give you balls info about anything and its like they want you pull your hair out, yeah thats right theres a conspiracy with pc audio prod users and they will screw up so you end up with a mac.... i will not conform noooooooo

here's what i hate about apple: the only way you can create software for the iPhone is using MacOSx, which just can't be run properly on virtual machines. Therefore, they make you buy some form of iMac/Macbook/MacMini if you wanna learn how to develop shit that makes THEM get more money, since it's the apps that make the iPhone so appealing.

And that's completely out of the topic, but i had to rant.



(but yes, MacOS seems to be aeons ahead of windows, which is pretty obvious since they gotta program it to run on a specific set of hardware, and it's unix-based. Hey Biert, how are you? )

I think a few important things over having good gear are the performance quality, and using whatever you are most comfortable with. First off you need to have a good solid performance to work with, or it'll be hard to make sound great. And I've tried recording using techniques I'm not used to/haven't practiced, and everything comes out sounding like dog crap. Or I just flat out can't get things to work. But I've been using the same programs/hardware for around 3 years now, and I've been able to get a much better sound over when I first started. I'm not a very technical person when it comes to recording, I just spent way too much time tweaking things to sound right. Of course I've dropped a few chunks of change to get better sounds (drums for example), but a lot of it is just finding your way around things to make them sound how you like them.

All that was done with a Line 6 Pod and Acoustica Beatcraft/Mixcraft on my PC. I'm still learning and practicing some things, but the differences from when I first began to now are pretty drastic. It's all just being able to know how your gear works and spending the time workin' with it.

True. In my class of about 12 people, 10 of them use Macs and they ALL talk crap about PCs. Its stupid and ignorant. Why not just accept the fact that each are good for different things? I love PCs and have always used them, but I'd take a Mac for tracking music. I'll ALWAYS mix on PC though.

And then I laugh when they start crying because they can't use Pro Tools because they updated their system from 5.2.4 to 5.2.5 or some dumb insane crap like that....

Compression and eq are a trap (new discovery for me...) mic placement and levels are the way to go.

Would you like you elaborate on the above comment? I'm not disagreeing, I just love how every sound guy has a different rule for everything so essentially no one is wrong. As for me, I am but a student of the art so I'm taking all advice on board.

In regards to what you said about PCs, PCs probably do require a bit more of a computer savvy kind of nerd behind the wheel but that's cos they always fuck up. Wish I had a mac...
