And judge it we shall(as well as enjoy it ofcourse) but we can do neither of these things until we have a nice shiny disk in our Cd players! If you took that as a hint then you are correct!
Nah just playing, bring it out in your own time man but i cant wait!

Sounds quality killed it dead for me though, listened to it twice.

The Dev wrote:I'm mastering it myself at a studio with a Neve board. I've never done it before, but how hard can it be? Make it sound better and make all the tracks the same relative level, right? I'm not going to compress it in mastering though, maybe limit it a BIT, but I want it to be quiet when it's quiet and loud when it's loud.

I dunno man, everything I've been told has been: you really should have someone master who knows what they're doing. Of course, I'm sure mastering engineers want you to think it's so hard so you'll have to pay them to do it. Is it a money saving thing, or you just want to do it yourself? What do I know; I'm a cheap bastard. Anything I do is "mastered by plugin".

Just in case you read this...

Dev, will you ever produce a record for Metallica?

Their last two records sound awful, I'm a big fan of the band but I can't deny this fact (although I think St Anger sounds awful on purpose and that job was pretty well done)... on the other hand, Black and the Loads are overproduced in a way, although IMO the Black album is perfect soundwise... the ideas for their songs are ok, they are not masterpieces but they rock and the band seems to be pretty happy with their music so, good for them... they shouldn't write for the metal audience they should keep writing for the love of playing, and that's it... but, hard as they try, they cant seem to get their sound straight...

They say they want the dirty, dinamic sound of a live recording... but the product is always too dirty and far from dynamic...

If they offer you the chance of producing the next album... would you consider it an option? :o

Is there even a Metallica album that you like or you just, dont listen to them at all?

Just curious... thanks... :P

In my opinion, Devin more than knows what he is doing at the mastering phase. He may not even agree, but the way anything he touches sounds is pure gold to my ears. All of the older band stuff had a great production sound, Ziltoid was great, and the stuff he has been producing lately (namely Dichotomy...I love that stuff) has sounded fantastic. I trust him to make it sound the best possible at every stage of the mixing and mastering process. I truly hope I am proven correct with this release!

Later that day, in the studio...

"What the hell is this?! What have I done to my music?! Why does everything sound like it's coming out of a tin can?! Gwwaaaarggahagh!"

Load is a great album... non metal, alternative-country oriented but with great tunes and great performances... (Kirk's job in that album is better than his previous attempts to be a guitar hero)

At last! Someone who agrees with me! Every time I talk to someone about Metallica, they tend to hate everything after ...And Justice for All, or at latest the Black album. I will concede that St. Anger is crap, but I really enjoy Load.

Synchestra has a strange production to me. It sounds absolutely huge and i love all devin's albums. However synchestra has these really big guitars while i find the drums sound really thin in the background, and its some awesome drumwork going on back there.

Ziltoid and the new black i still enjoy, however as intentional as it may have been i find it sounds way more organic than previous albums. The Bigness and zany random samples, effects and overall layering like on city, alien, terria,OM,Infinity were sort of what made devins production stand out to me as the best. So when ziltoid and the new black came out i wouldnt say i was dissapointed but i hope KI has the big layering going on.

snicker.

As previously mentioned in the commercial acceptance thread, everything 'tallica did after the first half of Kill 'Em All was overproduced commercial toss. Proper Purists dismiss anything written after Mustaine 'left'.

I am intrigued by this 'Load' album you speak of though. it clearly ain't the one I've got. My copy only has one halfway decent tune on it (Bleeding Me). Although I did buy it in a street market in Kuala Lumpur for about 20 cents so it is possible they foisted some other dreadful crap on me in a bloody seminiferous sleeve. (Dontcha just hate it when that happens?)

I thought Synchestra had a pretty fair amount of over compression. When it happened, it worked. Alien I thought had tons of it, yet I consider it Dev's best production work.

So Dev, when this thing is done, how long do you estimate before we can get a copy of it for ourselves? Mmm?
