Yeah! You know what I'm talking about 8) I don't know, there's just something really special about having the physical CD, opening it up, popping in a disc and letting it work it's magic.

Plus, mp3's sound like ass.

Plus, I want to pay for the thing. It's only right.

Ok, now I'm really tarting to sound old fashioned, and I'm only 20. ha!

I did this with Opeth's Watershed. I head down to the stores one day before the official release to see if they had it and... Yes! Bought 2 special editions, one for me and one for mah friend who's birthday was the next day. It was eargasmic.

I'm exactly the same with CDs. If it's a band I could give or take I'll download the album, if it's a band I love, and feel they deserve my money, I'll buy the album. I'm a total sucker for album art too, which is why Ziltoid special edition was such a frantic purchase!

Devin, you should release like at least a ten second snippet of one of the songs. This waiting is killing me. I've been waiting since May 2007. Ziltoid was UNBELIEVABLE, but I'm hungry for more good music. Oh woes to the music industry and their ability to sign bands that sound exactly like each other. You're my last hope in believing there's no end to good music, Dev.
Time to sleep... :zzzz:

I was once like you, I believed that everyone other than one particular artist was a steaming pile of shit. You need to open your mind man, people can make good music and not be Devin Townsend at the same time.

That's why I branched out into seeking more music from around the world. Which is how I found Jrock. Seriosuly, if you don't mind the fact that lyrically you won't understand unless you can either speak japanese, or look up translations, there is some really good stuff out there.
I think theres something kinda different just listening to how someones tone of voice is to pick up the meaning, rather than actually know the words, if that makes sense.
I know a lot of the fans, espeically American and Europe ones are bit strange ( like me, :P ) But at the end of the day, other fans aren't important.

Sorry, I kinda ranted D:

But yeah. I always look into all genres of music as well. You'd be surprised at what things you'll like that you can ccome across, and otherwise wouldn't given a chance because it's in a 'scene' or 'genre' that isn't what you usually listen too. :D

I agree with Nathan to a degree, but these are Devin Townsend forums, so it's in keeping for anyone on it to focus on his music specifically. Doesn't mean that people here only listen to one style of music or one artist though. I don't normally listen to metal  but I've nothing against it and like Amber I also like listening to music from other countries, even if I don't understand the lyrics. I haven't tried Japanese rock yet though!

Woo, high five Stella! :D

If you'd like to listen too it, I would recommend you start off with Gackt. He kinda covers a few genres, but its prodominatly rock. :D If you look up Kagen No Tsuki on youtube, it's one of his msot fantastic gigs.

On that page somewhere I put up the full setlist for the first half of that gig. :D

But back on to Devin Townsend:

4 albums is pretty intense. Where have you managed to get all the inspriation from? :D

Two bands in particular that will definately open your mind to new sounds are Secret Chiefs 3 and Estradasphere.
The 2 bands mix everything from Black and Death metal, folk, surf, JRock, ambient, rock, persian, classical, tribal, electronic, 70s movie soundtrack, funk, dance, lounge and computer game music. Usually in the same song, and that's just the styles I can think of names for. Both bands do and have shared members from time to time and include members from Mr. Bungle. Really good music indeed and if you like them they'll definately broaden your horizons as they did with myself.

I spent my teens and into my 20s thinking Metallica were the be all, end all. It wasn't until 05 and I really listened to Devs music that everything changed. When I loved Metallica they made me love metal directly. Dev helped me love and appreciate many different styles of music indirectly. And the layers and layers that comprise his wall of sound style of playing improves your ear immensely. I had always liked Classical music but I found a new appreciation for it after that. Same with Jazz, Electronic, Blues etc.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that music is an energy that acts like any other in the universe and takes it's effect on you no matter what. Music at it's core knows nothing about genres or trends and when played well has the same effect on you. I find that it's the emotions I perceive from the music that determine whether or not I like the music. But my "emotions" are just a word to describe my version of the reaction. Whatever you call it, you can find it in all the best music. You just have to find it. That's why I love Last FM. And typing in the two bands I mentioned above has resulted in some wonderful additions to my music collection.

Bah, I've ranted enough. :patrol:

your last few posts couldn't have been further from useless. you've explained a lot, to me at least. I've always wondered why my teeth hurt whenever I looked at a green or black chalkboard.

I'm officially thinking too much about this post so it's done. thank you for your thoughts.

Hey thanks - sorry it's taken an age to read your post! I'll give Gackt a go as soon as I have time to look him up in between housework and work work. And :zzzz: of course.

The Dev wrote:It's very different and very special...very strange...very minimal...deeply satisfying and sometimes very heavy in a 'new' way...it may be too dark for some. I've worked on this record more than almost any record I've ever done next to Ocean Machine. Sometimes I think it's brilliant and sometimes it freaks me out.

I have an ambient record in the works as well. (That one is a ways away though...)

It's sober.

Three of the most exciting things I've ever heard from Dev; EVER.

Wow, all this is nearly a year old, and I only just found out today! I should be ashamed to call myself a Devin Townsend fan! :P

But on the bright side I have less to wait than the rest of you. Heh!

I can't wait!
