Sorry, late joiner on this thread!

Devin has bipolar disorder? I didn't realise. That must be very hard to live with. I have a nephew with hyperautism and he sometimes has terrible mood issues - he's a happy bright lad most of the time, but then he'll have a mood swing and end up trying to throw himself out of the window screaming 'I wanna die I wanna die'. He's only 8.

It's funny (funny weird, not funny haha) because I've been having a rough time this week and had to actually turn off Accelerated Evolution because, even though it hadn't bothered me before, some of the tracks were upsetting me (and I have NO intention of blubbing at work -especially as I'm going for a permanent job here....). I put Ziltoid on in the end, it had the right mix of angry rhythm and humourous lyrics for my mood at the time. But I wonder now what sort of mood Devin was in when he wrote those tracks, and whether a bit of that had rubbed off.

One of the older posts here said that you'll never experience the music the way that the person who wrote it did, which I'd agree with, but actually I think even the same person can listen to the music and get different things out of it depending on their mood and experience at the time.

Wow that's pretty intense. Have they spotted any triggers of it or is it litrally just like a random switch? Either way I hope hes okay :D
And thats an interesting reaction to AE. Quite a few songs make my feel uplifted from that album :D (minus Deadhead and Suicide. They make me feel uncomfortable :? )

It seems to be a random thing, although apparently he does get into a odd mood sometimes, and occasionally that ends up with the 'I wanna die' business. I don't see them much because I live a fair distance away, so it's harder for me to spot the signs. But it really is quite disturbing when he goes off like that, it's so alien to his character.

Weird - my favourite songs from that album (when I'm not upset) are Deadhead and Suicide! I think it's because they're angry that I like them, but I've not given it much thought. I quite like the song 'Loser' that Devin did with Arjen Lucassen as well, for similar reasons, although Deadhead and Suicide seem to express a deeper, more nebulous anger to me.

The Human Equation is an amazing album in itslef. the fact that Devin wrote three of the songs and sings on them just adds to it, and Loser is very interesting and unique

I personally love "Deadhead"- such overwhelming emotion, the beautiful transition from soft vocals to screaming and wailing, and that mournful guitar... I don't find it to be an "angry" song though, despite the vocals. More just... pained. Unrequited love, or something like that, but not really angry. This is probably just me, but the SYL stuff is just about the only music of Dev's that I find to be "angry."

I like Pain better, it's more recognizeable Devy-style.

Oh yes. I don't dislike Deadhead, but I think its the amount of emotion which puts me off. I can't sit still and listen to it. I either have to fidget and distract myself from it, or turn it off. O.o
But it is a good song nonetheless :D

SYL is definitely 'angrier' but sometimes flickers of a sadder side touch the surface too. But there is quite a bit of humor too. SYL had a very interesting mix of emotions, or so I think.

He didn't actually write the songs did he?

Excellent album it is!

I think he wrote his own lyrics. Recorded the tracks, then sent them to Arjen.
Is that right? It's morning and I'm forcing my brain to function. *gulps coffee*

You are right. Devin didn't feel like coming to the Netherlands, so Arjen sent him the records, Devin did his bits on it and sent it back!

The wonders of modern technology - you don't even have to be in the same country, let alone the same recording studio! I like a lot of Arjen Lucassen's stuff, but I think Loser is my favourite from the Human Equation album....I don't think I've ever heard a didgeridoo combined with (almost Riverdance-y) Irish music before. And Devin's screaming at the end just makes it.

It is a melancholy song as well, pained is a good description - it reminds me a little of a dirge (I mean that in a nice way!). I guess I'm thinking of the section where he sings ''Coz you are so vicious' etc, it does sound like the sort of thing someone might say if someone they love is treating them badly - but there is anger in it too. I'm not talking violent physical rage, but the sort of inner turmoil that only someone you love can cause by being...to use the vernacular....a complete git. It hurts and makes you angry because that person is close to you and should 'know better'. That's how it comes over to me anyway. I guess it just proves that different people get different things from the same piece of music! It's interesting to see how people respond - there seems to be a real variety just here.

Strangely, I thought Deadhead was alot about all of life. The riffs and what not give me the "I'm a big wave and I'mma crush you." feel, and then lyrically it's about everyone - The way we can be heartless, cruel and uncaring.

Or maybe I just read into things badly. xD
