Rush? Everybody always seems to hate me for this but I really don't enjoy their music. Neil Peart can do anything on drums and Geddy and Alex are talented as well but for all their technique I think the songwriting is lacking...Plus Geddy's voice is a bit over the top...Tom Sawyer is catchy though...I really don't hear them in any of Mr.Townsend's music...Grotus, White noise, cop shoot cop and others- yes but Rush-definitely not.

I'd love to hear some more creativity with field recordings/sound effects, (like the kids and frog in Synchresta), adds an extra visual/narrative feel to songs. Or just to offer that extra texture.
"Ki" Where's this term originated from? To me I can only think of the word Kinetic.

Not sure about 'hate', but I'm pretty sure you'd be well wide of the mark on that one. I'd be willing to bet that you'd scarcely find a Canadian muso playing ANY kind of progressive-type music who weren't influenced by Rush, in some way. If the extent of your Rush knowledge is Tom Sawyer (magnificent song that it is!) and you think their songwriting is poor, you need to go back and find out more. I'm sure Devin would have listened to fair amounts of Rush in his formative years. If he'd had no affinity for them he wouldn't have done Natural Science.
Don't like Rush? Absolutely fair enough, they're not everyone's cup of tea, by a long way. But to deny 4 decades of influence is plain ignorance, sorry....

Sacbuts, crumhorns, harpsichords, dulcimers.... I could get into that. I mean, I'm all about straight forward guitars, bass, drums, vocals most of the time; but if he's going to mix it up I would hope he'd mix it up medieval style. 8)

Oh my god. I would actually be astounded if he used a harpsichord! I love that intrument!

Hey Deeeeev.... :P

I found a "build your own harpsichord" on eBay a little while ago actually. :D

I didn't deny their influence. Rush's impact has been huge and anyone can see that. I just don't detect it much in Devin's music. I've heard much more then just Tom Sawyer-you can't judge a band by one song, however, I did have a couple of their Cd's at one time but upon a couple listens decided it wasn't my cup of tea. Admittedly, saying their songwriting is poor was a bit extreme but I just don't connect to their music which, for me, is what it's all about.

Right? Right?! That would be wild!! I'm sure he could squeeze something like that in, tastefully. He's a very tasteful man :D

Oh man, I've seen "build your own harpsichord" type things online too! I imagine it would be really hard, but it's still a cool idea. You should do it Amber

EDIT: Hopefully it will let me edit this at last! For some strange reason it just decided to quote and post?

But anyways - I have clubs for hands, how I'm even able to type is an amazing feat on its own :P I think a harpsichord may require a patient touch which I just don't have.

That said, if I had the money, I would anyway :D

And of course he could fit it in tastefully, as the harpsichord is always a tasty instrument 8) :P

hahaha.....I gotta speak on this one...

ok, Grotus....Slow Motion Apocolypse is easily one of the greatest "unknown" albums in modern rock, and the album's diversity is something few have matched since....I always placed Cop Shoot Cop's "White Noise" in the same category as this one. It was really a few steps ahead of it's time.

Neurosis.....Dev, have you been able to listen to their newer stuff? If not I would suggest it. Much like yourself, the older and more they've matured they've opted more for intensity through layers than through aggression. "Sun That Never Sets" is a monster, while being beautiful.

Young Gods....I remember reading you were a fan of 'Supersonic" due to the chorus. It's nice to see someone other than me show some appreciation for this group. They later released "Music for Artificial Clouds" which I could see as something as a good back-to-back with your Hummer project.

I won't even get into Godflesh. I could spend pages writing about anything JK has touched (Jesu anyone?).

Dammit all...I can't wait for KI

I second the Neurosis love. Stones from the Sky never fails to give me goosebumps. I close my eyes about a minute in and by the time the song is ending I'm staring into a Hypernova being sucked into a Super massive black hole through to the infinity beyond.
Amazing visual song. Can't get enough of it. I should maybe stop mixing weed with physics though.

You should check out Red Sparrowes mate. Great band. Themselves and Pelican introduced me to Post Rock. The first album is especially note worthy as it somehow manages to be heavy, without being heavy at all. And amazingly beautiful too. 2nd album is much darker, but it was a product of pessimistic times so what can you do?

I'll second your Red Sparrows and raise you a Minsk. lol. Minsk basically continues where Neurosis left off on TSIB.
That doomy sludge shit makes my head explode. Nothing like it. One of the things that really sold me originally on Devin's solo stuff was of course when Ocean Machine came out (I was fortunate enough to buy it at SYL's Starfish Room gig July 17, 1998...from Tracy and Dev themselves!).....the doomy, slower pace of some of those tracks..and the layered production reminded me a lot of the reasons I enjoyed Neurosis, Godflesh, even some TypeONegative. Honestly though, when it comes to the slower wall of sound, give me "Dynamics" by Dev, "Purify" by Neurosis and "Tired of Me" by Jesu and I'm good. ;) lol Everything else is bonus.

Oooh. Dynamics. I havn't listened to that in too long. And Bastard too.

Well, there goes my evening. :smokeweed:
I may have to break out The Fountain sound track. Always reminds me of the first day I listened to Ziltoid for the first time. I watched that movie for the first time right afterwards. That was a very good day indeed. Life changing in many ways.

hahhaha rad. you are stocked to the hilt.
out of all their work, the title track to "TV SKY" is still my favorite...that whole album reminds me of a soundtrack to a french action movie....that and Night Dance just make me lose my shit....but yeah, at the time I heard them first (1993 or so) my little industrial brain didn't understand a rock band that didn't have guitars, but used them...it was so forward thinking for a genre that was turning stale in a hurry. And they managed to always stay ahead of the curve....

I also have them to thank for getting me interested in Treponem Pal's "Excess and Overdrive" album (their only good disc). Franz I believe produced that one.

btw I don't see the Showgirls soundtrack in there lol. "Kissing the Sun" was on that. lol

Heh heh. Yeah, at the time I had just started reading about theoretical physics and spirituality so by the time I sat down and heard Ziltoid and then watched this my mind was exploding. The two things just complimented so well, what was happening in my head at the time. The overall vibe on Ziltoid and then Color you World and The Greys in particular were two songs that actually put certain things into words for me, but I get that alot with Devs lyrics. Which as always, is probably both a good and a bad thing. Then the whole Death as an act of creation thing just nailed me in the brain.

Ooooh. We Ride just came on my speakers. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
