Question - Is the minimal dynamic range shown for Hyperdrive a result of the mix, or is it the result of production by the cd manufacturer? If Dev provided tracks with optimized dynamic range to the cd production facility, do they then have it within their control to compress the dynamic range? If so, wouldn't Dev be able to address this?

If it was the mix then was it deliberate? Is it safe to say that the track may be "maximized" for overall loudness; but what Audacity shows summarizes the "loudness" which may sound crappy (I would think) on lower end systems. Digging deeper you may find that only the bass range is maximized leaving midrange and treble more nuanced. It is not necessarily the entire spectrum. Right?

Please don't take what I say as any kind of attack; I wish to learn.

none taken . it could be just how dev recorded it or it could of been maximized i wouldent know im not dev. if dev would elaberate i would also like to learn.

but from what i can see of the leavels displayed by audacity it looks maximized. may not be so who knows. dev clarify for us?

This is one of the darkest records I have ever heard. I saw them play Locust Star live, it was awesome.

 Oh man, no good could come of that - still a funny mental image though!

It's a shame I haven't had any Devin dreams - but last night I did dream that if you put a picture of Geddy Lee under your pillow before you go to sleep- he'd visit you in your slumber, sprinkle some "bass dust" on you and you'd become a better bass player. I was PISSED when I woke up and realized it was a dream.

That's just too weird - even for me. :?

You mean that dosen't actually work? Well fuck.

I know - that's so fucked up! I was counting on it to give me the skills to play MalNAR!!! But.... no. Nothing yet. I still haven't removed the picture either
It can't hurt your odds. I used to have a punch of pics of Geddy over my bed those were the good days.

Occasionally I wonder if any of my favourite artists are into each others music, which is interesting because my tastes vary quite a lot. But I'm sitting here listening to Paintin' the Town Brown and read this, and I'm reminded of when I first saw the Century Media 10th Anniversary DVD and I was wearing the same Ween shirt as Dev at the time - blew me the fuck away. Awesome to see Ween getting the recognition they deserve from the artist I respect the most.

That also reminds me of back in 2004 when Chimaira/In Flames toured Australia - I was having some drinks with Peter (Bassist from In Flames) and Mark (Singer from Chimaira) after the show and I brought up Devy. I mentioned how City was the greatest album ever released closely followed by Ocean Machine - Peter agreed and Mark mentioned he'd only heard Terria and hadn't listened to any SYL! Then not even a year later I was on a holiday and went to Sounds of the Underground in Vancouver and Mark from Chimaira couldn't stop verbally fellating SYL between songs, it made me wonder if he went off and grabbed City on my recommendation and in turn realised how awesome Dev/SYL are...or if he just saw the crushing live show at the start of the tour and realised then.

Grotus, The Young Gods, and OLD...man, three bands that are overlooked way too often. Some awesome stuff from all three of those bands, it's just good to know that Devin really probably has never missed a single awesome band.

Funny, I've been listening to Mass, Slow Motion Apocalypse, and the Luddite EP from Grotus an awful lot lately. All three are HIGHLY reccomended.

Wow, that's cool. Both song and video. Reminds me of a band I listen too occasionally called Kula Shaker, they have some songs inspired like that too. Not really very metal, but it's something you can relax too.

Hey Dev.

Happy fake baby and stolen pagan ritual days!

Since you are in a particularly open and talkative mood and someone said the A word (audiophile), is there ever going to be a chance of any of your material making it to a higher resolution format? I've asked several times and been ignored but will anything ever be remixed onto a DVD-A, SACD, BluRay disc or even wax?

With your penchant for enormous soundscapes, it seems like multi-channel or analogue would be a natural inclination whilst monkeying in the studio?

Did you ever check out the remastered surround mix of Still Life by Opeth? Even in a lossy format, the guitar tones soar through the soundstage and I have picked out harmonies and overdubs that 1000's of hrs of listening to the original CD never revealed.

Fuck it, I'll come right out with it... What would it cost me for you to consider a vinyl pressing of Terria?

Visually, that was a beautiful video... I've never seen anything like that before. Sonically, it was intriguing, I liked the song for the most part.

Always good to get music recommendations, especially from someone who's opinion is highly valued. :D
