Well, then, make a trip to Austin, TX. We could use a bassist that isn't concerned about getting a 30-minute improv. slap solo on stage.

 Watch what you say, I just might!

Yeah I can't get down with the slapping - I saw a picture of Bootsy in another thread and I threw up in my mouth a little. All the Fleas, Bootsys, FreekBasses, Mike Gordons of the world just need to go away for 10 years.

Good luck with your search for a decent bassist. They're harder to come by than you might think :?

Drummers are even harder to find.

Correction: good drummers.

Devy, spelled Devy! wrote:Side note: While Mendez of Opeth doesn't play a fretless bass (that I know of) I really admire his playing of a Marcus Miller signature jazz bass, with his fingers. At least at the concert I saw in October, he mostly used that bass. Very cool, since I expect the bassist of a metal band to use a pick on a 5 string (not that there's anything wrong with that!) But it was a pleasant surprise, dude is breaking the mold!

If you watch the DVD that came with Watershed, in the studio rehearsals he was playing a 5 string bass. And he always plays finger style. On most of my music I prefer using a pick on bass because I like the harder attack on it. I like the bass to be thick and punchy, while not trying to sound too much like slap bass. Using a pick gives bass a totally different sound than playing finger style, and that's one of the things I love about bass, how simple pick hand techniques can completely change the sound of the instrument.

Yes. The awful ones are everywhere - I can imagine it's a difficult skill to build for those who aren't completely obcessed with drumming though. You have to be fully dedicated, or else you set yourself up for a lifetime career of delivering Chinese food.
Not really known what it's like to be in a band with a crap drummer, does it feel restricting or anything?

I've been playing for 7 years, I've always been totally hooked on it, and I've never looked back. I'd whore myself out and show you my band's Myspace and Youtube videos, but I'm not gonna cram it down your throat. It's progressive metal, but not in the Devy way - it's more Dream Theater style.

In terms of the process:

Compose in Logic studio with Midi guitar and midi keyboard. Export as OMF or seperate audio files.

Sketch out songs in Protools with ez drummer, synths and midi back in logic.

Import Logic files into PT, record the meat here. (guitars bass etc)

Live7 for Loops, standalone, sometimes rewire.

Mix in Protools.

Master in Waveburner.

If there are orchestral parts, print out logic score to transcriber and have him do the ugly work.

Drink tea. fart.

Do it again.

EZ Drummer for the fucking win! Thats all I use! haha.

Mixing and mastering are the things I need the most work on...I can record just fine, but when it comes to making everything sound incredible I still have a bit of trouble =/

It's terribly restricting, to the point where it's just not worth the effort anymore. You send the drummer home, whip out a metronome or looped beat or something and just jam with the rest of the band (excluding fills, etc.). Pretty lame.

I wouldn't mind hearing your prog. band. Why not post it in Fan Art?

on the contrary, the writing/recording process is the ultimate point of music. if you hate doing it, what's the point? why hire someone else? then it's not your music

seriously, that's stupid
