Nay on the Wizard, sounded too 'full of itself' and refused to get ugly with me.

Pod XTlive is kickass...direct out for sure, a little synthy, but thats what it's used for...ALL of Ziltoid is the Pod XTlive direct...and theyre like 300 bucks ! I bought an X3 thinking it was going to be even cooler, but it's built like a toy, and doesn't sound anywhere near as good for what I need (recto and bassman)

I'm working on that 'signature amp' now...they just sent it and I should get it this week...I'll keep you posted. It's going to be grey.

JCM 800 is killer with a tubescreamer.

An amp is the voice.

I dont know man, I love my X3 Live! The Big Bottom amp is one of the beefiest sounding amp models I've ever used. Plus the dual amp model feature is so much fun to mess with. Doubling delays, running 2 different mod effects, you name it!

I cant get the recto model to sound good at all on a POD or Toneport =/

And that's awesome that Ziltoid was all POD! You should post the settings ;)

hmmm really eh?

Maybe I should spend more time with it...

I was just up and running so quick with the xt that I probably didn't give the x3 a chance.

...so I shall!

I wonder how that Fractal Axe thing is? I'm also using peavey revalver and it's pretty awesome.

yeehaw!

Yea the X3 is like a computer! I love the thing, you can even come close to emulating a good ole Fender Blackface! (if you really tweak it..)

hey hey, you mean 'Metal' Nerd. get it right, phhhhhhh

i love the PodLive, i think the recto is the best one on there for fatty mcgatty sounds. Havnt used the X3 at all yet, Dual heads and Cabs, awesome shiz, i love doing dual tracks with the recto and marsholes makes it soooo fat, i'm yet to use Revalver or Axe, but i heard Axe is pretty similar to the pod...... but yesssss, it would be interesting to know the settings for the 'Toid on a pod, but then again, wouldnt that be part of the 'greatest guitarist in the omniverses' secrets!?

Round these parts, I would kind of consider being called a nerd to be a compliment. Means you know somethin' 'bout somethin' :D

Not enough ugliness, eh? Yeah, that just won't do.

but yesssss, it would be interesting to know the settings for the 'Toid on a pod, but then again, wouldnt that be part of the 'greatest guitarist in the omniverses' secrets!?

^^That would be interesting indeed - I can think of some guitarists would like to know Devin's secrets to sounding awesome.

If you feel so inclined, Devin, I'm sure the bassists of the board would appreciate any info you had to offer as well - that is, if you're giving out info  Although, I always assumed playing Dev songs would require a 5 string bass =/

OK Bass...

I Freaking LOVE bass...as much as guitar, more sometimes. In some ways it's a very 'spiritual' instrument. I grounds me, if everything is a vibration, bass is the earth mover...nay the UNIVERSE mover...

My bass thoughts...

Yes to Massive Attack, Kai Ekhardt and Godflesh, Nay to Victor Wooten. Bass should play bass. Minimal, low, huge, subtle and organic. My favorite basses are Sadowsky modern 5 24s , Warwick Dolphin Pro NI (although the low string flops) and fretless 5s. In fact, FRETLESS is the sound, an alien fundamental. The 'producers' instrument. I DO NOT appreciate bass solos or bass noodling. Play a guitar if thats your deal. Hold the ladder if youre controlling the universal fundamental.

Put two guitarists in a room and within 3 minutes, they are usually both above the ninth fret, and getting increasingly louder. And while the dicks are out, the bass is like 'Do what youre gonna guys, because until I change my mind, we're all in C...'

I LOVE BASS.

I'm using a Demeter DI, a Sans Amp RBI, an SVT Classic, An Orange 'handwired' head, and a Mesa 1x15 4x10 combo cab.

In all honesty though, bass is in the fingers (No pick for me...fingers put me behind the beat in a really connected way)...and I feel the vibration in the body. So my favorite bass sounds as of late has been a good DI, and the RBI direct. (that fucking thing is AMAZING...and 250 bucks)

I feel much more 'myself' with the bass, as the best lines are simple and profound, the space between notes and the 'pregnancy' of the release. I want my bass to sound like the Hummer, and be immense. Dub.

I am using the Sadowsky (Perfect low string) and the Cirrus fretless on Ki, but I'm saving up for a fretless 5 Sadowsky.

I WISH the Warwicks would hold the low G better, I LOVE how those things look.

The producers instrument, there is something so incredible about that instrument. It's what the aliens play :)

I've just been reading a little about Duris Maxwell. What with all these classic amp sounds too, it sounds like a bit of a departure. I'm really looking forward to hearing it!

Generally I agree, though there's one dude, who can groove and be technical at the same time - it's Sean Malone off Cynic/Aghora/Gordian Knot. Especially of first Aghora record there's lot of precise, rapid fire basslines (played with fingers) which don't turn song into prog wankfest. There's one, jamey song with jazzy noodlings, except that , there's only grooving. Probably only bassist I can recognize by ear :)

I just picked up a Fractal Audio Axe-FX Ultra, and let me tell you it blows the pods (i have an XT and an x3 too) completely out of the water, I think you would love it.
The wealth of sounds you can get out of it is astounding, and not only that, they all sound absolutely like real tube amps. the tones really break up like with a tube amp if you hit the strings a little harder. amazing stuff.
You must give it a try.

I feel a bit dumb doing this, but here are some short sound samples I made using the Fractal with various settings and my rubbish production skills.

OK, this is a joke song I made for a friend for Christmas, ignore the out of key solo and awful vocals :) http://moshman.shackspace.com/hmusic/evy.mp3 (using the Recto amp model. another thing to point out here, if you can hear it over the silly vocals right at the end, is that the low F# on my 8-string is very clear, which is something I always found hard to achieve using my pods or my real ENGL amp)

and here are some tests for some heavy stuff I made:
http://moshman.shackspace.com/test%20-%20pball.mp3 the ENGL powerball amp model (which has since been improved vastly)
http://moshman.shackspace.com/test%20-%20VH4.mp3 Diezel VH4 amp model, which sounds better now too.

the bass guitar was all recorded through the Axe-Fx too, it has an SVT amp sim and a couple of bass cab sims too, I guess you can hear it clearest in that first clips

some philip glass, all sounds are from the Axe-Fx http://moshman.shackspace.com/glass%20-%20amp.mp3 (using piezo pickups)

tons more stuff here from different people http://www.fractalaudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=19
