This Cold Black is the best song Slipknot has ever done in my opinion. The album has a few solid tracks, namely the title track and This Cold Black. My expectations were beaten, the album is much better than I thought it was going to be!

Apt title, I think.. I've given this 3 spins now.. And I wanted it to be good, and it just isn't clicking with me at all. First thing that strikes is that the soft songs on this are terrible. Really, really bad, especially if you compare to the softer ones from Vol 3 (Circle/Vermillion, Pt. 2). I wanted this to be a step up from Vol 3, so a lot of my comparison is to that, cos that's their new direction now, they're well gone from Iowa and certainly gone from the self-titled... but this is just so feckin weak right from the start..Turn on Vol 3 and you get the Prelude and then The Blister Exists just smacks you in the face and it's followed up with hit after hit. This.. I dunno. The Slipknot I was hoping for on this album doesn't show up until the very last track (All Hope is Gone), and even that isn't that good. This is patchy, discordant and just so uncertain. Its like they don't even know what they wanna play any more, whether they want to stay with the heavier or move more toward a Stone Sour-y hard rock sound. Chances are there probably won't be another album to find out which they pick, as well.. Bah. Horribly disappointed.
