hi everyone,

does anyone know perry rhodan? that's a german science fiction series (little books that appear weekly), the longest (and most megalomaniac) of all times. for my illustration class at school, i'm doing some production painting-stuff for a possible tv- or movie-adaption.
since you devy fans enjoy gigantic, futuristic stuff, i thought i'd post my work here. all pictures are work in progress, as i like to wait a while before i add the final details. feel free to comment and ask questions!

the first one shows a statue that stands somewhere in the mountains on a remote planet. it's like 2 miles high:

i nthink i'll change the sky a bit, and there will certainly be more small metal stuff attached to the head in the final version.

Damn! This looks fuckin' knorke, dude! Seriously... Wow

Wasn't the video you posted one or two weeks ago also for a school project? What kind of school is it? Sounds very... arty.

the shading on the mountain in the foreground is excellent! what kind of paint did you use? how did you apply it - surely not a brush?
what do you plan to do to the sky? -i like the 'bleakness' of it as it is now.

its a really nice piece of work. lookin forward to seeing the final version.
and definately post some more of your work!

Palette knife?

I had the same thought as jon... you've done a great job with the light on the mountains in the foreground.

I used to read quite a lot of science fiction but haven't done so for a long time. Makes me wonder if I should get back in to it. Bah... so many books, so little time!

wow Ike! that is really some talent! musically gifted AND graphically gifted, you should be proud! I love the way the mountains are done, it's all so grey and barren, awesome feel to the painting =D.

thanks for teh kind words!

it's acrylics on paper, applied mostly with a knife except for the clouds + sky. that knife-technique was something new for me, and it rox my sox: there's no easier way to make interesting textures, especially for large objects.
the sky is too dark and too flat at the moment. it looks even darker on the original, so i'm gonna lighten it up till it looks really cold and wide. i think that'll make the whole picture even frostier. you now, that kind of really bright, clear winter sky that makes you shiver just by looking at it ;)

be sure to see some monstrous spacecrafts in the near future :D

ah yes, and the mountains are done the bob ross style: three colors, 1 k nife, 5 minutes. try it out, it's really easy.

edit: the school, right. it's for graphic design/media design, and they also have a class for illustration. so we do all kinds of modern art/design, including film and animation, as well as the old school stuff. it's quite cool but also superficial in a way. this is it: http://www.htk-hamburg.de

Man, I'm totally seeing a woman's eye in the lower half of the mountains... One of the first things I noticed actually, strangely enough:

I can see some other possible things in there too. I guess that technique creates a lot of odd shapes...

Excellent painting, anyway! The use of colors really grabbed my attention, and the whole thing sort of reminds me of those viral marketing campaigns they used for Shadow Of The Colossus, but more... Sci-fi-ish.
Post more! :D

oO thanks man, that's a compliment! the whole artwork for that game was sooo awesome!
as for the odd shapes: now as you mention it... i shall do more of that technique, it has so much random in it, i'll probably paint the weirdest things by accident :D

going back to work now, there's paintings to paint 8)

is it supposed to look like an insect/man buried shoulder deep in snow... or is that just me?

Its the neck and head of an insect, I'd say. Looks like a Mantis to me...

And in terms of seeing things in the mountains:

Green Circle - Face
Red Circle - Face
Blue Circle - Flower
I love pictures where you can see little images inside the big image, intentional or not.

Excellent work, Ike!

right, except that the "snow" is supposed to be low clouds, or fog or something. it's a statue of a homanoid species of insects.
