Are you sure we're talking about the same band? I'm referring to the Opeth that released My Arms, Your Hearse. You know, the album that contains the song with the greatest ending ever, When. And then there's the loneliest guitar line ever written at the end of Dirge For November. There are literally hundreds of other moments that are equally moving in all of Opeth's catalog. Calling Opeth emotionless, no matter who you are comparing them too, is really quite laughable and ignorant.

Yeah, I used to think that Opeth were amazing too, then I heard maudlin of the Well. Now Opeth just sound like another melodramatic prog band that overuses the same emotional queues


btw Opeth aren't overrated (well... maybe a little... like those people who say "I never thought metal could be intelligent until I heard Opeth, zomg they r gods and made me turn off my Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree records"). Their songwriting style is very unique; they do tend to reuse ideas, but they do have their own thing going on and I haven't heard any other bands imitate it very well.

they are decent, but i could never get into them.

Basically motW, Opeth, and Devy all have amazing qualities, though for some reason, more recently I've been REALLY into motW (especially Bath). Though I certainly won't go so far as saying it makes everything else obsolete...

If by "Maudlin Of The Well" you mean "Opeth", I completely agree.

I guess I was a little overexcited when I said they made Terria look bad, I shouldn't have been so quick to saying something like that about one of my favourite albums, but Terria has been taken down a notch, and they completely ruined Opeth for me... they're just emotionless and repetitive compared to motW

Well, I just listened to "Heaven and Weak", and I think that song may just be the epitome of repetitive. The song just meanders and meanders, the vocalist emotes almost nothing and it seems like they're going out of their way to cram as many genres into one song as possible, simply for the sake of doing it. I hate to say it, but his noticeably mindful way of enunciating every single syllable is just too reminiscent of almost every emo or pop-punk vocalist I've heard. I will say they are certainly unique, and you've piqued my curiousity to check the rest of the music out, but so far, a mediocre vocalist over aimless, wandering music isn't supporting your "best metal band ever" claim.

I just listened to the songs on that myspace page, gotta agree about the vocals... Really didn't fit the music, he definately has that kind of pop-punk/emo 'accent' if that makes any sense. Hard to describe, but very noticeable when you hear it.

I guess it's all opinion, but with some exceptions they didn't really hold my attention for long. Never claim something is "the best ever", as your opinion is just that-- an opinion-- and even disregarding that, there may be a band you discover in the future that you enjoy even more.

I did like some of the little instrumental bits though.

Haha you're NOT getting flamed for that. I disagree with 90% of your posts, but not that one.

Of the big four or whatever the fuck they were called, Slayer was the worst band.
