First off let me just say that I have been a huge Dev fan for years and finally had the opportunity to see the DTB last night in Cinci.
I was told the doors were would open at 8:00, Cinci is about a 3 hour drive for me so I made sure we left early so we had plenty of time. We got to the Venue at 7:15 which gave us 45 minutes of waiting in the freezing as cold in line. While in line I was staring to get a bit IR8 because the line would move about 2-3 feet every 5 minutes. While this was all happening it hit me that Bogarts security is a bit stiff these days because of the Dimebag incident in Columbus. Anyway we get about 10-15 feet from the door and the worst thing possible happens..... I can hear that the band had already started playing.....SOMMABITCH I was pissed. By the time i got in they had already played Truth and Regulator. So I ran my Bearded ass to the front hoping not to miss any more of the set.
Now I have been trying to keep up with all the posts on here and noticed that alot of people have been saying some really good this about the DTB live so i was dying to see it for myself. I was wondering how well they would go over with the crowd of Opeth fans as I had read that the Symphony X fans were haters. Since bogarts security situation sucks, it only left about 100 people in the crowd during their set. The crowd started off pretty stiff as usual but within 15 minutes dev had 'em head banging and even had them trying to polka dance....lol
Performance- 10.0
Like I said i've never seen them before and was wondering how they would be able to pull it off live, and let me just say WOW!!!! If you closed your eyes and imagined that you had headphones on you would swear that you were listening to the records. This band is absolutely tight as shit and they definitely do the old material justice. Ryan is an absolute monster behind the kit and Mike holds the low end groove like a motherfucker with his tone, Brians playing totally compliments Dev's not to mention Daves playing, which is evident during Vampolka and he had all the samples there as well! And we cant forget about Devin, his playing was perfect and his vocals were spot on. I was wondering how he would do his patented screams while trying to pull of his melodic vocals and he proved that during Pixillate going from the screams to the Female vocal lines FLAWLESSLY!!! I don't know what Canada puts in thier water but damn gimme some of that shit....LOL The set was the same as previous posts Truth,Regulator,Gaia,Pixillate,Vampolka and Vampira.
Now all in all, it cost me about 50 bux in total for me to see this show and like I said, I was totally bummed that I missed the first 2 songs but thier performance totally made up for that. Absolutely "World Class". They should be in direct support of Opeth and hopefully someday headlining the states. 30 minutes is just not enough time to convert people who haven't heard this stuff before. It takes about 30 minutes just to pick through the layers and textures of this music to realize what lies underneath it all. Brilliance!
I did get to meet everyone in the band except for Dev after thier set. Brian and I talked for about 20-30 min during Opeths set, a very humble guy I must add. Ryan seemed pretty rocked too lol.... I was hoping to pick up the Digipack of Synchestra but they didn't have any out with them and the only had 1 shirt design as well. But I did see alot of DTB's stuff selling. If yall want merch i suggest you just order from the site, much better selection and pricing. These damn venues are robbing band these days of making a profit on merch.
Anyway thats about it, hope that helped some of you out. Most of this stuff is just meaningless babble but i never claimed to be a jounalist...LOL If your heading to any of these shows just to see DTB, be sure to get there as early as you possibly can to avoid missing any of the set. Or if you live within driving distance from Cleveland they will be playing on the 22nd with no Opeth which means an extended set. Though not posted on the site Brian did confirm this last night!!!!
Just wanna thank the guys for the hella performance and taking the time to talk with me..... Stay warm in the Handi-bus....lol
