You are yet to explain yourself beyond one sentence insults, so there is not much to say to you. Try studying audio and music for at least a few years if you want a real debate with me.

I've listened to the album through various stereo systems including the leaked mp3 version, but mainly the cd release. It doesn't matter what system or if it's an mp3 or not, i'm still getting the same results. Listen more carefully, especially to Hypergeek.

one of the only genres that isnt compressed hardly at all is classical music, because that music is all about nuance and grading in the dynamics. most stuff these days sounds very flat dynamically compared to a classical recording. the only drawback being that you have to turn a classical recording up louder on your stereo to get a good listen. i think that dynamics in music are sorely missed this day and age (and when i say dynamics im talking the classical versions which are marked pianissimo to fortissimo etc.) everything is so hyper compressed that they get destroyed.

Same here rgx612a.

I agree with you to an extent too, Guffers.

Devin Townsend makes uncomprimising mixes, you need THE BEST equipment to be able to hear it all correctly.

Totally agree, that's why SACD and DVD-A really need to take off. I doubt they will though, we live in an age of portability and MP3's, so our audio quality is only going downhill from here. Thank god vinyl is still being pressed, I love my Alien vinyl.

Beef_Balonga, for all of your delicate sensitivity to my comments, you're doing a marvellous job of being an immature bitch yourself. Cut the crap and start talking audio again.

Yes, I agree 101%. 16-bits just isn't enough to allow a loud metal recording to also have dynamic range, especially when it is mastered with low quality systems and even portable crap in mind.

You guys just need to stop arguing, let's get back on topic. I love talking compression with my fellow audio nerds. No reason to argue about it.

what do you mean by to an extent Paroyst? im a classical musician by the way. so its kind of a different world that i come from, but ive also had heaps of experience playing in bands. dynamically they are two different universes!

sj_2150 thanks for you input. Funnily enough I have also studied music and technical production for a number of years. I also earn a living in the field.

*lol* Don't take offence Guffers, that comment was an affirmation, not a detraction. I think a lot of genres and styles of music benefit from heavy compression and that many instruments benefit from the technique. At times I sorely miss the lack of dynamic range your speak of - on other occasions though it proves to be a nuisance, depending on the situation and application. That's all, just general commentary. ;)
