I'm not agreeing, nor disagreeing with you. I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything. I just can't stand it when people scream such things, but do not support their opinions.

Yes. I don't rate their musicianship. It's a muddle of noise with no defining qualities that make me sit up and say 'wow'. It also strikes me as music that is trying to sound heavy and evil without doing so naturally. When I listen to Burzum I hear geunine pain and anguish, when I listen to Immortal I hear a genuine crunch to the guitars and Abbath sounding like the Devil is lurking in the snow. When I hear, let' s say SYL, I hear pure energy, anger and intensity. Slipknot sound like they're trying to manufacture their sound - and I hate it!!! Lyrically they are terrible. I'm not usually one that is into lyrics to any great extent but I do notice when they're terrible (actually I'm watching Metallica's Some Kind of Monster at the moment and Frantic has similarly awful lyrics, albeit they were once a very good band). Corey's voice is annoying. He has one particular level he hits in his voice that sounds half-decent but most of the time he grates on me. They have a couple of tracks that are promising but they waste it with their mediocrity and the fact that everything else is crap.

Incidentally, I agree how ridiculous to have 'forest metal' etc etc, I'm just saying it exists. I swear that there must be as many sub-genres as there are bands these days.!

Thanks, I didn't think you could make it :P

Now, for the contents of your posts, I'm not sure wat you mean with the "muddle of noise" so I'll have a go on what I think you mean (could be wrong tho). I think Slipknot have a rather 'clear' sound, especially compared to other nu-metal bands like Korn. You have to understand that there's a lot going on with 9 band members making pretty fast and heavy music. Their sound is really not bad.
You also have to understand that Slipknot are not a black metal band so you can't really compare them to Burzum or Immortal. When I hear Slipknot I don't hear devils and pain. I hear a lot of frustration. They are pissed off at the world and themselves, and those are proper "metal" feelings aren't they? A lot of SYL songs were born from frustration.
Coreys voice being annoying is a personal opinion. I think Nevermores singer has a very annoying voice, but that doesn't instantly mak them a crap band! They are excellent musicians, it's just the singer that disgusts me. But others love him!
It's good that you bring on the Metallica comparison, because Slipknot are doing what Metallica did 15 years ago with the Black Album: get a lot of kids into metal! And among the 'real' metalheads, they are just as conroversial as said album.

I have to say that I think this is turning out into a personal fight of Burzum trying to stay on his point and the rest trying to tackle him... It's getting rather pointless I'm affraid. I think we can conclude that opinions and tastes are different for every human being, and that some people are more welcoming towards new or other things. But we all knew that already.

I really like Slipknot, and, while I'm getting rid of my "street cred" , Linkin Park and dare I say it, Evanescence, Shame on me? You decide.

Yeah, so why discuss anything? How very boring.

People should be questioned on the statements they make, only some people are arguing taste here (which IS pointless), what I'm asking for is for people to unpack the statements they make. An objective statement of fact like 'slipknot isn't metal' is just begging for further exploration.

But there's nothing wrong with examining the reasons why you like or dislike things either, it's that kind of discussion which is almost the most valuable, self-knowledge etc. Sitting in you own little corner going 'I like this, you like that let's respect each other's taste' is all very well, but the the really interesting stuff comes out when you ask 'why do you like this?' As long as things don't descend into tribal mud slinging (as musical discussions can, being so close to our hearts)...

I don't think things are getting uncivil quite yet... :D
There's plenty of mods around if need be and everyone's been warned already. ahah.

I agree dub - there's no point us sitting here sucking each other's dicks.

I think it has been a civil argument, I've merely been forthright in my assertion that Slipknot are crap. And no I wasn't comparing them in style to black metal - merely commenting that those bands (of which some are BM) achieve something that Slipknot will never achieve.

To me Slipknot are a comedy act - there to be laughed at.

It has been very civil, and that is very good to see. I am glad, Burzum, that you are not taking any of these things personally and are willing to discuss this in such a manner.

I think one thing that has been highlighted here that we can all agree on is that Slipknot is a band for young people that helps get them into many more kinds of music. Whether that makes them better off for listening to them in the first place is a different matter all together, but it can definately help someone get into the 'metal' genre (whatever that may mean). How many people that got into Slipknot 4-5 years ago still only listen to them?

Not that people should only listen to Slipknot in order to decide they are rubbish or anything like that!

Sheesh. What a load of tosh. 'metal' sucks!

Yes well I must admit that a few years ago as I was exploring metal I did listen to a bit of Slipknot for a while but as I heard more and more quality I soon realised that Slipknot offered nothing and came to the conclusion that although 'heavy', they're not really 'metal'. And as I said I think they're crap. But hey, that's just me.

Before I forget keeps rotating.....Basta!

There is maybe somebody out there who finds Slipknot as recordbraking as Judas Priest, well I belong not to them, anyway as long as it sounds good for me........where shall I put my signature!
