Ive always disliked this band, ive always thought it was all false angst ridden noise designed to attract angry teenage depressed outcasts to their shows who will probably grow out of it in a couple of years.

But recently I read in an Devin interview saying that he's a fan of them. I was acually kind of surprised in way but i totaly respect Devins choice. I started thinking perhaps there is something that ive misundertood about Slipknot. But i dont know what it is.

For example, some people misunderstand Meshuggah or Tool at first but when they begin endure themselves into the music more, the beauty and the original intent of the music begins to unfold.

If theres any Slipknot fans here, please share what is it you like about them

When I saw the topic of your thread I was ready to lock it, but I see that you do want a proper civil discussion of the matter. That is fine, but before things get out of hand I would like to state the following:

HDF Rules wrote:02 - While debating and discussion is fine, we will not tolerate obscenity, insulting posts, personal attacks or purposeless inflammatory posts. Our decision is final in these matters. Obviously the quality of the forum depends on the quality of the members who post. That's right, YOU. Like most things in life, the more you put into it the more you'll get out of it.

05 - No flaming, trolling or bullying! Keep it civil. Be respectful of other members opinions. Discuss the message, don’t attack the messenger. It's great to disagree but personal attacks or harassment will not be tolerated. Expressing hate towards people due to their religion, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or any other bias will lead to the immediate banning. Insulting, threatening, harassing comments are not appropriate in the HDR forums community

09 - Bashing bands, labels and magazines is funny perhaps, but this is hardly the forum to do so. I even doubt there is one at all. So please refrain from starting posts about how you hate this or that band, no problems if you want to say this in a thread on a band, but please no thread about hating a band... put your energy in saying something positive. I personally have plenty of reasons to dislike some bands, but I will not ventilate this here or in public.

The reason I do so is from experience of similar threads in the past. If this thread goes that way it will be spanked right out of the window.

Anyway!

I've never really been that big into them, but I can see why some may like them. Regardless of the music I think that they share a sort of 'balls-out' attitude with a band such as SYL. I could say the same of Rammstein I suppose. Also, from what I have heard, they are an awesome force live.

rammstein are great, theyre music is very creative. slipknot however i just find to be heavy for the sake of it, ive never understood why they would need percussionists when you have a drummer.

Thats the sort of impression i got as well. Its hard to tell whether they were doing this just for the sake of some outside recognition or simply being more intuitive in their writting regardless of how they are perceived. It could be a bit of both, i dunno.

Well, i think it does enhance the sound live (though i havent seen them live), but when recording with Ross Robinson (he did their first two albums) your not going to get that full digital surround sound. This was one of the main things i was a bit confused on their first album. I knew they had 9 people in the band but you could only hear 5 of them. But they were still happy working with Ross though. Perhaps not the sound, but performance wise.

they are entertaining. Of course they are not the best band in the world and there are better bands that are much more technical etc. but they are entertaining and that's the thing. People seem to forget that music doesn't always have to be art to be enjoyable. I simply like them for their entertainment factor now and I do admit that I really loved them years back but I still appreciate them. They have gotten quite a few people into Metal and I think it's better that kids get to listen to Slipknot and discover Metal through that than listening to Britney's music. I also find it cute when some (not all) people rant about how they never liked Slipknot from the start but they were like 10 or 11 years old themselves when Slipknot started to get big :) People shouldn't take everything TOO seriously, really. :D

I was never a big fan of Slipknot but enjoyed their debut for a brief peried of time. They deserve respect though for being a 9 piece band, having made 3/4? albums and not having memeber leave.

I can't say Slipknot are a band I'd choose to listen to, and they are not without valid criticisms, but I do think they get a bit of a ahrd time when they don't deserve it. Most of the time, the people that criticise bands like this with such ferocity are those who feel somewhat thretened by it (ie who like bands who I would personally put in a asimilar musical group, or would imagine similar peopel liking)

I must admit for a long time I judged them on the fact that had so many members and had all the mask and stuff and assumed it was mindless, but I will say that I now believe that even if it's not my cup of tea, that it is at least interesting an dhas it's own sound.

I think Vol. 3 is better than their other two albums combined.

I've not actually heard it, but from the songs I have heard it at least sounds like they didn't fall into a generic forumla and went for a somewhat different sound, which to me has far more artistic integrity than a lot of bands who are supposed to be "better"

LOl, I always find myself sticking up for bands, even when I don't really like them

Thats a very good quality to have. Im a musical snob acually, and id admit the starting of this thread could be sub-consciously based on this arrogance. Its not a good thing to have, Its rather self destructive.

But i guess the sole intension of this thread is not necessarly diss the band, but to understand their motives, and see what makes them appealing to some. Why is it that i dont like them, but so many others do etc.

I think the reason so many people like themm is the same for any popular music (and popular sube genres popular metal, popular rap etc etc) is that the songs are kinda catchy.

Without trying to sound snobbish here, it is a sweeping generalisation, but never mind - as for why more "musically educated" people sometimes like them, I would hazard a guess is that they do kind of have their own sound, though I have heard people talk about some members as great at their instruments, I can't see that myself, but I can appreciate that there is some skill in writing the music they have done.

Most things I think about Slipknot have already been said. It seems to me that they are trying to be heavy for the sake of being heavy. Although I do think that there's some evolution in their music, and not every song is just a copy of all their other songs.
The extra percussionists are pretty cool, it really adds something unique to the band. And their drumming is pretty cool, even without the oildrums and whatnot.

The masks are pathetic hto.
