Talk about other artists here (even though they all rip off Meshuggah)

What album cover is that in your avatar?

Also, Shrinebuilder kicks all kinds of ass. :guitar:

Ya know, to be perfectly honest I'm not sure what album it's from-- it's a piece of John Dyer Baizley of Baroness' work, whom I love, and I bought a signed print at one of their shows so that's why I chose it for my avatar.

Been getting really heavy into Stoner/Sludge/Doom recently, nice to see someone else on here who appreciates it.
And yes-- Shrinebuilder are freaking awesome. A piece by Josh Graham, one of my favorite artists as well.

Ah, I thought that's who it was by.

Also, I just answered my own question. Did a little searching, & found out that your avatar's actually from a Black Tusk/The Holy Mountain split:

When Baizley does an album cover, you can usually be sure the content is gonna be great, like Baroness, Black Tusk, Torche, Kylesa, Skeletonwitch, Kevelertak, etc.

Favorite song from my favorite Floyd album.

I personally like the sound of his kit better on this album, that's actually what caught me when I first heard Black Tongue, was how good his toms sounded.

Speaking of cool drummers and drum sounds, I'm currently busting out Civilized Worm by (The) Melvins. Love the two drummer set up. Really has brought new life to the past three albums.

Machine Head - Unto the Locust.
First impressions are about on par with The Blackening, though it doesn't feel as overlong as that album did in parts; I Am Hell is one of their best opening tracks, I'd say.

In my opinion it's their best. Completely blew my expectations out of the water. From the single Locust I was expecting it to basically be a Blackening clone, but it's the only song that really sounds like it. in a way that was good, because that meant I never expected the record to be so intense.

Opeth- Pyre. The two bonus songs are standouts for me. They have a more tangible structure, and they don't share the musical themes of the other Heritage songs.

Well it's a lot faster & more Thrash based than The More Things Change, which is the record Ten Ton Hammer came off of. Their earlier stuff was really heavy & crushing, & had a really Hardcore attitude, but their newer material has a added "epic" atmosphere on top of that. I'd say it's a lot better, though there are some who disagree.

Here's 2 tracks if you want to hear it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzGuRY-9rVA

Has a rather long intro, but goes crazy after 2:00

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peXxTNG5YRA

This one's a little more like their old material.

Maybe that's it then. While the drumming is simpler I feel like I can pick it out moreso than on past albums. Maybe it's more groove-oriented too despite being simpler. I dunno, I feel like Brann shines on the album whereas Bill and Brent always seems to shine so much more on past albums.

I dunno dude, I think Brann's certainly had his moments in the past. I think more than anything else Brent's taken a step back out of the spotlight, since he's typically the crackhead associated with Mastodon the most. It works for them. God, all of the true metal kvltists hate the hell out of this album, as I figured they would. I mean, this isn't exactly Radikult status.

I really don't see what's to hate. Then again I haven't exactly been a fan in the past. I really hated them for the longest time.

Oh no, he totally has, I just feel like I can notice him better on this album for some reason that I can't put my finger on. I dunno... maybe the many repeat listenings I am sure to give it will shed light on it.

God forbid a band progress and do what they want to with their music, right? Mastodon should have definitely made Remission over and over, you know, that would have held my interest. Just as Dev should have done City over and over with SYL. That keeps things interesting.

To stubear280: it's because there's pop elements in the album and you can sing along with parts of it. And kvltists want to distant themselves from anything remotely like that. It's just childish, and to stay stuck on one album from like 10 years ago completely ignores the band Mastodon is/has been in those 10 years.

I've seen it getting a lot of shit as well. In my opinion it's definitely not their best, but that's not saying much with a band that has a backcatalog as solid as theirs. I'd put it about middle of the pack.

I just miss that over-arching concept that their previous albums had. It took quite a while for the fact that there wasn't one to sink in. Hopefully that's what's going on with other people out there, but i doubt it. Metalheads can be real prickish when a band doesn't play what they want them to.

Good point. I think it's stupid. Sometimes pop elements can be fun! Plus, calling this album pop is pretty big stretch.

That want for bands to do the same thing again is why I hate most fans. I LOVE music, but I can't I can not stand stupid fans. Not any of the good people here, but I hate reading on youtube, "Hey soandso, make another thisalbum." You can't do the same thing twice. Even if they rerecorded the same exact music again, it's not going to be the same. If a band's music doesn't make you happy, then you make your own music that makes you happy.
