apart from the deal-breakingly rage-inducing vocals, i really love this song. i actually really love stabbing westward's first 3 albums, but the singer is just... no. no sir, i don't like it. it's a shame though because i always thought they were one of the better gothy industrial rock bands out there, i really like their use of synthetic elements. it's quite complementary and not overpowering. their songs evolved and didn't rely too hard and boring STOMP STOMP 4/4 drivel.

i remember back in the day (when every piece of music seemed so fresh and new), in my first years of metal and industrial, there was a radioshow and i heard this song "save yourself" i was in awe, it took me 1 year to find out who sang the fucking song, then i got it (after many calls to the radio station) stabbing westward. boring anecdote i know, i have to agree on the vocals though, but those guys sure know how to pull off a tune.

Out of the new Dream Theater, Mastodon and Opeth, The Hunter wins.

I have to say I agree. I've never been a Dream Theater fan so can't pass judgement on that, but, while I love the new Opeth I have to say the new Mastodon over it. It's close with Decon/Ghost for my record of the year.

as a whole, it's #2 or 3 depending on how you look at it, and there are a handful of songs that are ho hum for me, but I love it just the same.

What a weird effing pop song. It works. I am so happy I'm not a metal beardo and can't enjoy simpler things.

The only song on the album that I'd personally label a weak song is Thickening, it's fairly forgettable. I feel like everytime I listen I pick up on new cool stuff in every song.

But it's not tr00 enough!

Also, excuse the double post, but is it just me or did Brann really take his drumming to a whole other level on this album? I mean, don't get me wrong, his drumming has always been great, but I feel like he really shines on The Hunter. Some of the stuff he lays down, damn.

Maybe it's higher in the mix then or something? I dunno, I really noticed it on this album for some reason. I'm not a musician, so I don't know the technical stuff. Maybe I'll go back and listen to some older stuff and pay closer attention to the drums and compare.

Ya know, to be perfectly honest I'm not sure what album it's from-- it's a piece of John Dyer Baizley of Baroness' work, whom I love, and I bought a signed print at one of their shows so that's why I chose it for my avatar.

And yes-- Shrinebuilder are freaking awesome. A piece by Josh Graham, one of my favorite artists as well.
