....the hell? I can understand being moved to tears by his awesomeness, but I can't quite understand what she's crying about.
I am on the work computer right now though, and the speakers are crappy, so.

At home now, so now I understand what she's saying. She has issues. I know he loves his fans, but... not in that way, not in the way I think she means.

A better response:

Interesting point here.

but proof of what? That it is an unsafe environment for children in which we live, or an absurdly over-litigious society?

Kids run around all the time here in Japan without a problem. I don't mean like 10-12 year old kids, I'm talking 6-7 year olds on their own.

The latter. I'm not even 30 yet but I remember my youth to be more risk-friendly compared to what the youth of today have.

I started walking to school by myself at a fairly young age. So did a lot of people in my generation. I was almost pulled into a car by one guy, and I had another guy chase me down the railroad tracks I used to walk along, and he was wearing no pants with a raging hard-on.

My wife was grabbed and fondled by a man when she walked to school one day when she was a little girl.

My ex-girlfriend was picked up and carried to a nearby house where she was molested for 4 hours before she managed to escape when she was about 6. Her younger brother was molested on two separate occasions while walking to and from school by completely different people.

I had a classmate who vanished on the way to school, and he's never been found.

The world has always been fucked up, and because of personal experience, I choose to keep a little bit of a closer eye on my child than my parents and my friend's parents did with us. Kids need their freedom, but it never hurts to be cautious, as well.

I remember being no more than eight or maybe nine, and every afternoon and weekend I would give my parents a vague indication of where I was going and then I'd be gone for the day. Darkness and hunger brought me home. Used to just wander all over the place and get into all sorts of scrapes. Nothing like what you've described, thankfully... I was very lucky in that sense.

And I loved it.

HOWEVER, with a baby on the way I have no doubt in my mind that my kid/s will be under significantly more supervision than I was. Not because I disagree with how I was raised, or because I think the world is a more dangerous place. I'm perhaps more aware of what MAY happen if I'm not around than my folks were, and I'm just generally a more cautious person than they were. As they get older we'll gradually increase their amount of freedom, but sadly I think the days of kids running around alone at a young age are gone in Western society.

Gonna be interesting to see how I actually go, as this is all just theory.
