I think October 21s comes from the same guy who says the rapture will be tomorrow. He's just so nice and gives the sinners 5 months to party without all those annoying fundamentalists (or the ones that are "right" anyway) before the world ends.

And I think that December thing comes from the whole Mayan calendar hullabaloo. Because if the world isn't gonna end then... well then their calendar would go on forever. They Mayan culture knew all about that.
