The place to speak about Dev's current projects, and everything yet to come

Assuming I don't find a different job by the beginning of summer (I HATE where I'm working now!!!!!!), I'll have the 20th and 21st scheduled off. I'll probably keep it ol' school and bring a portable CD player with me to the beach. If the FLAC conversions are worth doing like people say they are, I might look into it and put them on my mp3 player.

So far, I only listened to the first three albums individually. So when I pick up the last two (and put them in the format of my choosing), here's what I'll do:

1. Drive into town listening to "Ki." There's a little club/karaoke bar I'll go to where a lot of tourists go and the DJ treats locals pretty well. If asked with plenty of time, he'll put on a special playlist of a person's choosing. So guess what hundreds of tourists will be listening to...

2. "Addicted." A fun time with friends and people from all over the country to be sure! After this, the next destination is close to my house, but far from the club. So on the way, I'll...

3. Listen to "Deconstruction." The roads will be almost empty and it'll just be me. I'll let it all out on the way to my destination and then...

4. Listen to "Ghost." By this time, I'll be on an unpopulated beach. The salt air and ocean sounds would complement this album perfectly, I believe. If it all goes like I imagine, I'll finish out the record watching the sunrise.

The question was asked and we are answering, that's all. Just goes to show to what level we've thought this out and how much the first listen to Dev's albums matters to us.

It has to be done just so, you know?

I find it a little risky to ritualize the whole listening process - it does put the album on a pedestal and it means disappointment, if any, is amplified. That is, if there is any.

When I listened to Deconstruction, a few nights ago, with headphones in the dark (actually my birthday :D) I felt very good about the first track, but I didn't get Stand and Juular at all, and I was in a state of dis-belief until Planet Of The Apes when I got "into" the sound. I think it's fantastic now, but it gave me a scare at first. (censor this post/delete it if that's a bit too "spoiler" :S)

One album this affected me with was Porcupine Tree's The Incident, which I played through on Audiosurf fully for my first listen. I still think it kinda sucks. Similar but not the same with Black Clouds And Silver Linings (Dream Theater), where I listened to crappy leaks of low quality, in the wrong order and heavily separated. Now if I get leaks, I get full good quality ones...

I can't get into The Incident or Black Clouds. They were both huge disappointments for me. Well...I guess DT not so much cuz I don't expect much from them anymore. But PT, yes. DT's cover of Larks Tongues in Aspic was so flat, but it was the second best track on the album. Count of Tuscany the only good one IMO. For PT, it's Octane Twisted and nothing more.

Anyway, back to topic. I actually plan on buying the mp3 albums from Amazon. I know, I know, not the same as the CD. I will be buying the DTP box set whenever that comes out so I'm saving my money for that. When I get them, I will not be able to wait for the perfect listening environment. I will be at work, I'm assuming, that day. I'll just listen to Decon first followed immediately by Ghost. And then I'll probably give Ghost several listens for a while, and maybe Ghost 2 if that's available for purchase??? When I have time at home, I'll listen to them on my Grados, which I know will give more breathing room for everything going on in Decon, and for all the atmospheric elements of Ghost. It will be bliss. I'll probably fall asleep to Ghost for several nights. I can't f'n wait!!!!

I would love to root my phone and put an OS on it that plays FLAC & gaplessly, but my phone isn't rootable so that's not an option haha...

But my plans are to listen to all 4 in one session for sure. I don't know if I'll use my phone or not (mp3s, gaps between tracks...meh), but it would allow me to be mobile if I did. Maybe I could rip the CDs as single giant mp3's at 320kbps, then at least I'd hear them with no gaps...I'd have to put my phone on airplane mode so no texts or calls would break playback.

I don't have plans beyond that (yet) haha. I'll just wing it as the situation calls.

^^^ I love the moto atrix 4G, but the boot loader thing sucks and just in general, it isn't that great of a media player. I held onto my shitty iPhone 3G for that purpose. It's basically an iPod Touch now. I'll load the 4 DTP albums on that in apple lossless format and listen to it non-stop whenever I'm not at the computer.

We did an atrix review at work, and I echo that sentiment greatly.
