The place to speak about Dev's current projects, and everything yet to come

Hi everyone,
I am quite new to this forum but there's something that I noticed right away, just by reading a few posts. I want to say (or to ask) this: Has any of you ever met a musician (rockstar) who's so close to his fans as Devin is?
Well, let me tell you what I think. Before I even knew about Dev, I cherished bands like Fear Factory, Static-x, Mnemic, Suicidal T. or Napalm Death. I've tried to contact some of them many times and every single time there was just a BIG silence on their part. For instance, a couple of years ago I made a comic book about Fear Factory's opus 'Obsolete'. For those who know the album, it's telling a story written by Burton C Bell. I was kinda proud about the result of my comic book and I wanted to send it to Burton or Christian and perhaps publish it, if they liked it and gave their authorization. I e-mailed them through Myspace, as it was the only way I could get ahold of them. No answer. So I tried to contact Christian through his personnal Myspace page. 3 mails --> dead silence. That was 2 years ago, still nothing. Same with Static-x and Mnemic (their forum is dead).
I'm not trying to undermine all these bands as they are absolutely awsome in my opinion and they've inspired me so much through the years. I respect them and love them, I was just kinda pissed when I put so much in them and there was no reaction on their part.
But then, look at Devin. That guy has a very active forum and he has no less than 1093 posts or replies in it. The forum counts 167901 posts in 5398 topics by 5648 active members. He's always willing to answer our questions, to explain what's going on. He's on Twitter, Facebook, Myspace... and he's still posting on a regular basis, when not on tour and even then...
A while ago I e-mailed him because I wanted to send a painting that I made inspired by Gaia and I needed his adress. Well, four weeks later I got a very kind answer from his wife Tracy. I would have been happy if I could get an answer from Fear Factory's manager's sub-secretary! Well I got an answer from my all-time favourite musician's own wife. Well poeple, that only tells me one thing:
Than Devin is just as open hearted and generous in real life as I felt it when listening to his music. From the first minute you litsen to any of his records you can feel the love, the generosity, the kindness, even in his most brutal work with Strapping. You know, you get the feeling that there's a very good chance you'll get to really interact with him and that's something very valuable in such a selfish world.
I want to THANK HIM, and Tracy and all of his team and all of you guys on this forum. I love you all. I feel the same wind is blowing on all of us and that wind is coming from that fucking genious who unites us and binds us and keeps us together. I can't wait to share some sweat and some shouts with you all at his shows this summer.
Again, LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!
DEVIN ALL THE WAY

and that's all I wanted to say!

Cool posting 8)

Well the guys from Borknagar are close to their fans (at least virtually, but after concerts allegedly as well), as nearly the whole band is active on their official forum at ultimatemetal. You get answers, videos, and news at first hand :guitar:

Ask Lord K. Philipson (of The Project Hate MCMXCIX, Torture Division and formerly ass-loads of classic Swedish death metal-bands) virtually ANYTHING on the Global Domination-forums and you're almost certainly guaranteed a reply in the next 24 hours. Cool guy. Funny too.

That's a good observation. Even in most sweary SYL moments Devin never really gave that intimidating, tough guy vibe. Sort of refreshing in metal world, huh. Devin Townsend - helping us insecure shits enjoy metal since '95 :)

Cynic got their guitarist/growler Tymon in 2007 when he had been on the Cynic forum since '04, he, Robin and Paul are all pretty interactive with their fans, I've spoken to Paul Masvidal via Facebook twice, interviewed Tymon for a college project via the forum once, and Tymon especially remains very active on the forums.

i know a guy who speaks with the guys from Atheist on a pretty regular basis and has hung out with them a few times, and he says they're cool to fans. personally i've never actively tried to directly interact with anyone from a band i listen to (except when i looked around for devin for like ten minutes after cynic's set ended in cleveland back on that tour and couldn't find him, but ehh. not a biggie.)

i agree that it's very cool of devin to take time out of his schedule to keep his fans posted about what he's doing/thinking/planning, given the amount of work on his slate at any given time. it's an honor to know i'm a fan of a musician who's actively engaged with his fanbase and is really interested in what we think.

Well, thanx for replying to my post guys. To be honest I've never heard of any of the bands you mentionned above but be assured that I'll check upon them soon.
As for Dev's kindness and interest in his fans, I read this post where he asked his fellow forumers for help with a playlist for a show. Guess who else did that?
Michael Jackson. I may be a metalhead for the rest of my days but there's no denying MJ's genious and kindness. Same about Devin. I guess there must be other artists who do that but I'm sure there's not so many of them. Again, it's just an example.
thanx everyone!

One of my friends was actually contacted by a member of Atheist (she had no idea who they were, they just messaged her) and asked her to check out their music. XD.

What has been said about Dev is what I feel also, and agree with - but it made me remember a message I received on Myspace (lol) from Paul - from November's Doom. I still have it saved;

Greetings,
Just wanted to drop you a quick note saying you and my daughter share a name. She just turned 3, and Rhiannon is pretty uncommon, so I thought maybe you would find that interesting. :)

Novembers Doom

It was sent in November (lol) 2005. I thought it was cute/sweet. Haha :D

Having been a dedicated follower of The Sisters of Mercy since the eighties, the Devynian approach to his fans is quite a different thing to experience.
(While there´s an incredible load of bullshit rumours about Andrew Eldritch in the world. Fellow fans happened to stay in the same hotel as the Sissies a couple of years ago and had a very nice evening with Eldi and the band at the bar. They described him as a very friendly and interesting person to talk to. He´s just not so keen on talking to everyone, so he is a bit more distanced.)

Let´s just say it´s a very nice thing to have you around visibly and accessible, Devin. I got into your music only the recent three years, and the question why you are not as widely known as The Sisters or, let´s say, The Gorillas or Prodigy simply is beyond me.
Was the karma spoilt by the misstreating of Guacamole, possibly?
Nevermind!

Oh, and I congratulate myself for my good taste of music. HA!

You really can feel how personable Devy is in his work and his interactions with fans- and how frequent those are. He's just a genuine,
down to earth kind of guy. I really admire him.
