I have been wanting to hear this for like evar.

It's exactly what you'd expect. I thought it was really forgettable.

It's one of those "wow this is really cool" albums the first time you hear it. Then it gets old really fast because it's basically just all shredding. Though I have to say I'd rather listen to Loomis shred than Vai.

SYL - Alien - Shitstorm

Alien is sorta creeping slowly up on being maybe more <3d than City...

Can someone explain to me what the deal is with Ulver?

I hear them raved about by lots of people as being really creative, pushing the boundaries blah blah.

So I thought i would check out their stuff today. All I can find is some fairly turgid Black Metal and loads of piss-poor electronica that seems devoid of any spark of originality.

Is there some hidden canon I have not discovered?

Kveldssanger. It's a completely acoustic/folk album. Pretty special, IMO. It's the only album they've done like that in their career - and I think it's one of their best.
