Man I'm not going to argue with you on that point...but I'm sure you've heard of the troubles they would have to go through to clone a full blooded, 100% authentic Mammoth. Generations upon generations of genetic engineering, and that is also if nothing at all goes wrong during the process...

As awesome as it would be to see a Mammoth, I just doubt it will ever happen =/

I know it's unlikely. But a boy can dream!

Awesome = Another autographed Dev album to ad to the collection! YIPPEE!!!

Throughout history my good man, species have died off and been replaced by better, more adapted species.

Throughout history my good men, cloned animals have had severe problems. We'll see what happens with the cute little camel before we start cloning pandas :P

I have no sympathy for an animal which refuses to copulate.

To add another slab of awesome to the night, Red Wings whooped the Blue Jackets in the first game of the series. Yay! :D

I'd just like to say, after observing what went on in the IRC room last night, that I think all you guys in there are awesome. Yes, it was like watching a chimps' tea party when the Ki pre-order broke out, but when you all started trying to round up the regulars who weren't online and got all worried they'd miss out I thought it was lovely. Best of all when Kiven bought a copy for Sari 'cos she wasn't there I almost got all teary-eyed.

(and she was all happy to be told that this morning - especially since she needed cheering up!)

Brownie Points to you all!

"Mustn't go that way! Mustn't hurt the Precious!"
Sorry I just had too. I was looking for that one quote about the "fat hobbitses is so niiiicee" but I couldn't find it
So if you do some musical entertaining, one word: TOWNSEND!!!!

Throughout history my good man, species have died off and been replaced by better, more adapted species. Let everything happen. This is why humans can be considered a "virus". We think it's our "right" to protect animals that are dying out, from natural causes or from carelessness on the part of other humans.

Basically, the Beatles said it best: Let it be.

That's not a very good attitude to have IMO. We are intelligent enough to understand and avoid possible repercussions of our actions. If we just let it be we could severely fuck up the eco-system.

It hasnt happened in the past, it wont happen now. We dont have the capacity to actually change our environment. Especially if it involves our ozone. Any depletion to it is done, we cant turn back time. The over use of CFCs and HCFCs along with carbon monoxide emissions is too high, all around the world, for us to change anything at this point.

So good luck, if you want to make yourself feel better by "saving" the planet, go ahead...you're just wasting your time doing something for nothing.

If you do have 100% factual proof that we can do something to "save" our planet, please, do show me.

It hasn't happened before? Really? Ever heard of the whale, or the rhino? Those are two well known examples of species critically endangered because of human activities. There are thousands of those. Most of them man made. Then there are the species we have actually driven to extinction, which includes several subspecies of tigers, the dodo and a shitload of other bird species. I suggest you read up on extinction. The rate of extinction is increasing extremely fast due to humans.

We don't have the capacity to actually change our environment? Are you kidding me? Ever heard of the atomic bomb? We have the capacity to totally destroy the environment. Unless you mean for the good, which would also be wrong. What you are saying about the ozone is false. The increased regulation on CFC emissions means the ozone is slowly recovering. [source]

And on global warming and CO2 emission the overwhelming scientific consensus is that man-made global warming is real. If you release a peer-reviewed book which convinces the scientific community of otherwise I will concede that there is nothing we can do to stop global warming, unless your peer-reviewed book cites some alternative man-made source, until then I suggest that we keep fighting it.

Despite what this post may make me seem I am not that big of a environmentalist, but to dismiss it like that is completely ludicrous. This is just what some quick reading up on the subject before replying turns up, if you actually asked a biologist you would get a lot more information then I can provide. In fact, you should go to a forum about biology or something to that effect, and ask for evidence from reliable sources on the subject. If you really want "factual proof", that is, and you didn't just put that in there to project self confidence in your argument, while dogmatically ignoring any real evidence if it turns up. ( Not accusing you, just saying.. people do that )

You took my post almost completely out of context for one.

When I said "change the environment" I meant that we cant change it how everyone thinks we can, for "the better". You seriously took that part of my post wrong.

CO2 emissions?! CO fucking 2?! You mean the stuff we breathe out? You're kidding me. CO2 is absorbed by plants and just about any photosynthetic organism, we still have PLENTY of those to go around.

Any animals that are dying out through natural causes should be left alone. No one was around to protect the dinosaurs or any of the creatures during the ice ages. And look, everything is still ok! Hell, everything is a little better if you ask me, nothing is trying to eat me right now as a matter of fact.

Human made extinction is wrong. It should be stopped, and I can understand protecting them, but if it's happening naturally, let it be.

I dont know what credits you have to make such arguments, besides being a self proclaimed "existentialist" which to me is just a way of saying "I'm a pretentious douche who thinks I'm better than you" Of course you have the right to your own opinion though.

Answer me this though, was the Earth warmer, and more humid during the times of the Dinosaur? You know, millions of years ago...before the Ice Ages.

Yes, we do have a lot photosynthetic organisms, but I don't know if you have noticed but we have also cut down quite a lot of them. Less trees + more CO2 emissions = more CO2 in the atmosphere. CO2 is a greenhouse gas, hence the increased greenhouse effect.

The point of the global warming thing isn't whether it has ever been hotter, it's that the temperature is changing so fast ( due to us ) that animals, and humans, won't have time to adapt.

I also don't think LeechMaster was seriously suggesting we bring back naturally extinct species and using them for anything more then possibly a commodity. There is a big problem with human caused extinction and cloning could help that.

Also about my credentials, I think a dissenting opinion to pretty much the entire scientific community takes more impressive credentials then basically just repeating the scientific consensus. I never claimed to be a biologist. I don't even have that much of an interest in biology, just a cursory interest in science as a whole ( physics in particular ).

PS: Existentialist is just what I call my one man band thing. I'm an atheist and cynic fan, and I wanted something along those lines and I think existentialism generally makes sense as a philosophy.

I understand that, but most companies run programs to replant trees that they cut down, all of them should do this.

Welcome to the history of the world, things change...We can try to change it, but my point was that we more than likely cant change it enough for us to adapt. Thus is the cycle of life on our planet.

I know what Leech was getting it, we finished that off and I agreed with him on how awesome it would be to see a once extinct species alive again.

Your opinion is obviously welcome, but question everything. Just because a scientist says something is true, doesnt mean it always is. Scientists are still human after all.
