At least the 80s had a strong image though.

Now it's like, boring mush. Seriously. I mean, Britain used to have such distintive styles, and now its just turned into like... Generic... Mush! I honestly can't think of a better word.

I mean. You have your different sub-cultures and crap, but theres just no distinctiveness to anyone of it. In my opinion anyway.

It makes me feel a little sad on the inside. :(

And I'm not into any musical scenes to be honest. I can't be into a whole "metal" genre, because its just like hearing the same old tosh over and over again. But the same can be said for every genre in existance. Theres a few bands that stand out, and the rest just try to tread in there shoes. Which is fair enough, if your enjoying yourself and being creative, its good. I just can't get into every single band ever. :P

no sarcasm. when i think of metal these days its a bunch of dudes with either emo or bald hair cuts screaming about why people dont listen to them while some monkey plays some tasteless rehashed maiden riff. THEN the drummer begins his *tick tick* bass drum marathon the whole way through the song and thats all i have to say, peace im out.

There are original bands out there in every genre...it's just finding them amidst the piles of - thank you Amber - 'Generic Mush'.

Well I guess I've found the most original metal bands amongst the piles of mush in this decade, and the least of everything else. There's probably like, fifty underground bands that nobodies heard of in every genre in every decade that are awesome.

Good points.
To be honest when it comes to trends or whatever they are, the best came from the 60's. Pretty much every good thing we enjoy today was invented or popularised in that decade. For me the whole thing started when a few people realised that a shirt and pants weren't for them. And while they were at it, work kinda sucked too and that had to go. And so on and so on until we had the hippie movement. In my opinion the first modern day shift on a large scale of how a group of people behaved. When they all just took a stand and said, wait a minute, there's more then one way to live our lives. When that was torn apart by Nixon and other prevailing global factors the hippie movement was split up into factions almost. Some going the Punk way, others going with the Mod lifestyle, then there was metal, with each group been held up as the enemy to the others. Suddenly "The Man" was just the guy who looked different. And these were further broken down until we have the generic mush we have today. If I was to really go rant-style I'd tie it into Goverment conspiracy/breeding obediant, psychologically and intellectually stunted drones and the like but this post is long enough methinks. However, there is hope in all this. The hippie movement was only a modern day equivalent of a thing that happens every so often to balance the equation. Revolutions go round and round and I think we're seriously overdue for one.

To realise that everything is truly the same no matter what label is put on it, is the only way to enjoy life. It's all just energy in various forms. But some people are only interested in seeing the differences I guess. And let's face it, most people take themselves far too seriously.
That's why I like to say Hadou-Ken! at random points while talking. To diminsh my own credability.

I'm going to assume that by the 60s, you mean the 1860s. Shit was top notch back then. And I mean it. Men and women dressed exquisitely. (okay, unless you were poor... But isn't that much the same as it is today?) I honestly find it a shame that pocket watches, top hats and emerald green dresses have gone so far out of fashion...

And yes, the victorians didn't only wear emerald green dresses, but damn I like that colour. xD

The 60's? You mean the era of 4 Chords that made a million? Please. Music has advanced to places people from the 60's couldn't touch.

Now the 70's is a different story, what with bands like King Crimson and Rush who still to this day can be thought of as ahead of their time.

I was just talking about trends in general and the effect they've had on society. With the music thing as a kinda frame for it all.
But you gotta say man that alot of 60's music laid the ground work for bands like Rush and Crimson to develop a truly eclectic sound with their anything goes attitude. I would never argue on a talent basis because that's just silly. Adrian Ballou by himself could school them all.

I guess for me, a lot of the older music is just kind of boring. Honestly I'd rather listen to some Beethoven or Strauss than most 60's bands.
