I really think Fenders are more status symbols than quality guitars. Unless you have a shitload of money.

That's just not true. Fenders are amazing guitars, but, as with all, factory-produced guitars, there are a LOT of shitty ones around, so you'll have to test a lot of them.
Or, buy a relic custom shop; they will always sound great.

I think I'm gonna use my Schecter C-1 Blackjack EX for a long time.. Indeed a great guitar. The quality is similar to ESP Deluxe (1000) series, believe it or not.
