Talk about other artists here (even though they all rip off Meshuggah)

Yeah, I'd prefer TFF to headline.

Last show I saw was a small festival out here in NW Colorado called Rock Jam last year, with The Marshall Tucker Band, .38 Special, Puddle of Mudd, and Chickenfoot.

I went to see Chickenfoot, because I am a huge fan of Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, and Joe Satriani. I knew that they would be great live. However, even though I really don't care for their music, I thought Marshall Tucker Band was pretty damn good live. But I was most blown away by Puddle of Mudd. They started out just kind of chugging through the songs, but at some point something just clicked with the band and the audience, and the energy, the music, and the fun this band produced from that point on was amazing. One of the best live performances I have ever experienced, and I am not even a fan. Well, I wasn't a fan. Like them a bit more now. lol

BrunoN wrote:Then there was legendary Jesu, in shape of Justin K. Broadrick himself, bass dude and a laptop. Music is damn atmospheric and movies projected behing the band were adding tons to the mood, JKB sucks at singing, though - and I hope he will buy some new tuners to his guitar, because it sounded like he was loudly re-tuning it between each song (those breaks were pretty long, some cheeky bastard in the audience started to sing the sound of tuned strings at some moment) so I have to say I was disappointed a little bit. I may be conditioned to expect a technically proficient band, though - brief look at the lastfm comments shows audience loving them and hating Tesseract :>

Oh, somebody shot the whole thing, including hot tuning action.

Despite the complaints above I consider it nice stuff, need to buy me some.

Won some late-minute tickets (an hour before the show? :P) for Kontrust this evening. They're only famous for one song here, but I heard their album and the hit single is (as usual) the least interesting song there. Good show, enjoyed myself and it only cost me a buck to hang my coat :)

That's why my girlfriend and I paid $100 to sit further back. :P

But fuck me dead, $50 (maybe $60, I forgot) for a crappy tour t-shirt... robbery.

yeah theyre all 50 at big concerts now. well i saw Nunchukka Superfly, Spider Goat Canyon, Wicked City and Bone last night. price for a ticket: $10 Nunchukka Superfly t-shirt: $20 the fact that i only spent $30 to see an awesome, kickass gig: priceless

i realize how cheesy that is but yes. big concerts are fucked now. the prices are getting ridiculous

Jesus wept! I'd love to see Tears For Fears live, but to pay 100 - 150 and have to sit through or leave early as a result of Spandau Ballet? Ouch.

T-shirts... still gutted they didn't allocate enough larger tees for the Dev gig in Sydney. Would gladly have forked over the cash. Must... get... over it.

Whooaaa, Spider Goat Canyon, there's a name I haven't heard for a while. I wonder if Steve still plays for them, I used to know him back when he was playing in a black metal band called Hellmaggot.

How much are the Australian Metallica shows? Not sure how much truth there is to it, but apparently Wolfmother are supporting... haha, oh dear.

There's a venue next to the train station I use to get home. If a gig sounds good, I'll go grab a bench and have a listen. Not the same as being there sure but
a) free
b) knitting allowed
c) reading a book during a wretched cover song for the distraction doesn't result in my getting suckerpunched

Saw Coheed and Cambria on Saturday. After going to concerts where the most energetic people would be pretty much limited to the pit, or would just stand around while awesome tunes filled the venue, it was great to see a theater full of people fist pumping and chanting in unison. Love 'em or hate 'em, Coheed know how to put on a great show, and a great show can easily become an excellent show with the right crowd. They were supposed to have Torche open for them which I was really looking forward to, but unfortunately Torche got a lot of their equipment stolen the night before. Circa Survive, the other opening band, played extra tunes to cover for Torche, and I was impressed by them for the first half of their set...great guitar textures, bassist/drummer syncing, and song structures, but the second half didn't do anything for me. Not nearly as original or sonically intriguing. So I took that opportunity to grab a Guinness before Circa finished and everyone rushed the bar. Coheed came out and sounded tighter and heavier than ever. Can't wait to catch them again.

Went to the "Vlaamse reuzen, Hollandse leeuwen" show (Flemish giants, Dutch lions) last night, an evening filled with Dutch and Belgian bands.

Annke van Giersbergen & Agua de Annique opened the gig. I knew I couldn't go wrong with Anneke's voice, but I wasn't sure about the direction her music has taken since she left The Gathering. But I have to admit, no matter how poppy the CDs sound, they do rock on stage. Really liked it, and bless those pipes :)

The other bands that played you aren't going to know, but for me the highlights were Dez Mona, The Black Atlantic and The Hickey Underworld. Pics here: http://picasaweb.google.com/biert85/VRHL.

Oh and I do want to say, I love Belgium for its vivid rock scene. They've got some great bands there (Triggerfinger, The Black Box Revelation, The Hickey Underworld, and a bunch more).

Fear Factory/Prong/A bunch of shitty local openers

Prong: Totally caught me off guard. I've never been much of a fan, but I've always loved Tommy Victor's guitar tone. They had Tony Campos from Static-X playing bass, which was a nice touch. The highlight here though was Tommy's guitar tone, and his delivery as a guitarist and vocalist. I fixated on his amp almost the entire time, and the only thing I could make out was a Krank cab...the head looked like a Line 6 or something, but it sounded way too good to be one. After the show, he was hanging around the merch area, and I talked to him for a few seconds. He told me it was a Crate...a CRATE. WTF. Some model they don't make anymore (I don't think) called a VTX 350h. 350 watts of solid state (!) power. It totally filled up the room, and complimented his voice quite well. No outboard gear except for a decimator noise gate. He was quite a nice guy as well, and gave my friend a pick, which he in turn gave to me.

FF: Tighter than a two year old. I was floored. I don't know what I was expecting, but they donkey punched my ass into next week. I'd seen them twice before, once at Ozzfest '99, and before that on the Remanufacture tour opening for Type O...but it was nothing like this. The set started out a bit muddy sound-wise, but as I moved closer and the set went on...It blossomed into pure chainsaw metal bliss. They played for quite awhile, covering tons of Demanufacture and Mechanize, with a few songs from "Soul..." and Obsolete...One from Digimortal, and NOTHING from Transgression (YAY!). Gene was at his best...maybe even the tightest I've ever seen him play. He was pulling his usual stunts, flipping his sticks in between cymbal crash breaks, all the while playing a thrash beat. It was quite entertaining. Gene and Byron were made for this band (and SYL of course). They fit so well...maybe because SYL was similar? I dunno.

The only part that turned me off about the whole night was Burton's vocals. His clean singing was awful. I don't think it's road-worn either, because I've seen too many videos and saw them live enough to know...he just isn't a good live singer, and never has been. He cups the mic way too close, making this God-awful mid range tone that sounds like Phil Anselmo making bird calls or something. It really took away from the tightness and heaviness of the music, but...I guess nothing or no one is perfect. At least his screams were on point.

Gene played so hard, he broke a snare head...so in the meantime of changing it out, Burton told a great joke- "What does Slayer lift when they go to the gym?"

Hell Awaits.

:D
