Talk about other artists here (even though they all rip off Meshuggah)

I wanted to go just to see Scale The Summity and ZpZ. Not a big Zappa fan but I've heard so many good things.

I remember the first Prog nation tour, fucking Between The Buried and Me and Opeth on the bill, absolutely awesome show. Dt's intro on that show was so pompous I was tempted to throw something at the stage. Any band who has an intro that basically says "We are the greatest band ever" does not deserve my time, money, or ears.

I saw Prog. Nation 2008 as well. Good show, really enjoyable :) except I really didn't like BtBaM (I guess I'm in the minority on that one, huh?) why did the singer keep twitching violently? He kind of looked like he was having really bad seizures :| Did you see that when you saw them?

Opeth was great though - no question about it. But, couldn't hear Mendez as well as I'd like to, the acoustics at the venue weren't ideal... not metal-friendly for sure.

Anyways, perhaps if you had witnessed the Myung tackle, you might've liked DT better - apparently there's no footage of it, only this one shot of post-tackle. Apparently it's like DT lore:

I can't tell where LaBrie begins and Myung ends  lol Portnoy... enjoying that quite a bit.

I think the most amusing part of PN '09 for me was I had 8th row dead center seats and don't really know the band's work at all. So I had fanboys offering to do all kinds of weird crap for me.

I caught Prog Nation '09 as well. In all honesty I only went because Scale the Summit was added to the bill. They had a short set but kicked ass, nice guys too. Zappa was cool, Dream Theater bored the hell out of me and I left 30 mins into their set. Their levels were all screwed too and the singer was in pissy mood.

I also saw Mastodon in Atlanta on their current tour and they blew me away. I was never much of a fan till they released Crack the Skye, now I'm hooked.

It's not a good concert if you can't hear or see Mendez properly. He should be dominating the sound. He is too awesome. I say more Mendez, less Åkesson whiny high-mid guitar tone.

Weeelllll, I have to admit that no, I have not. I don't know what it was about them, they just really put me off :( Mostly the singer's creepy twitching. You think I should give them a second chance?

You're telling me... it was so sad, couldn't really hear him or see him  AND there weren't many Akerfeldt cracks... his jokes are half the fun! :[

Yes, you should. Colors is a really brilliant album. Also, since I'm too lazy to go back to whatever other thread I just looked at--you should also check out both LTE albums, since you like Dream Theater. It gives you a healthy dose of prog. without that awful, warbling LaBrie.

Seriously. Learn Swedish, and go to a gig where you know he'll speak it. It is so much more awesome.

He's vegan, maybe that explains the twitching?

But yes, do give them a second chance. Here, why not do it right now? (Be sure to watch more than 4 minutes of it)

Oh wow, sorry guys - hate it.
I just hate that singer, I can't put my finger on why, he's just really unappealing for some reason. Do not like him.
lol at 2:18 it sounds reminiscent of Murmaider.

Sure Abydost, someone want to teach me Swedish? I'm down for that xD

If I didn't see the video and hear the blasty parts (and vocals of course), I'd swear it must be some previously unpublished '95 Dream Theater material.

Which is not that bad, I like 90s DT.

Don't tl;dr me on this one:
I saw Prog .Nation '09 on Thursday night. It was a really good show, went a little nuts when DT came on.
The first act, Scale the Summit, was great! I haven't enjoyed an opener act that much in a while. Bought the CD - excellent tappers, and cool tunes.

I wasn't crazy about the second act, Big Elf. There was nothing wrong with them, they sounded good, something just didn't jive with me.

Zappa Plays Zappa was cool as well - it's hard to form an opinion on this one, but I'll say that I liked it, however I can only listen to so many manic Frank Zappa songs live. Zappa's cool, but I can only take so much. And it was a full set *_*

Anyways, DT -
Even Prog. Nat. '08 in some respects! As much as I like all the other dudes, it was really all about Portnoy and Rudess this time. There were some blistering keyboard solos, Rudess put on a wizard hat at one point, played keytar, and had a little TV screen behind him of an avatar - of himself playing keyboard (also in a wizard hat.) Portnoy's drums were massive. He had three kick drums. At one point, he got up and walked around his kit and kept playing. His drums are some of the best sounding ones I've ever heard. He really makes A Nightmare to Remember pop out.

Setlist:
1. A Nightmare To Remember
2. A Rite Of Passage
3. Hollow Years
4. The Dance of Eternity
5. One Last Time
6. Solitary Shell
7. In The Name Of God
Encore:
8. The Count Of Tuscany

There you go. Good show, not enough Myung, but still fun. :D
