Talk about other artists here (even though they all rip off Meshuggah)

Finally arrived yesterday, do only on my third listen. Very promising so far though

I can vouch for what a great album it is; Through the Thicket... is one of the best songs I've heard all year. It loses a bit of steam for me towards the end, but that's only because the first half of the album sets the bar so high for everything else that follows. Shame they didn't include lyrics with it, because you can just make out some nasty stuff in The Great Explainer, haha.

As for myself:

Kind of gutted Katatonia didn't pursue this kind of experimental direction more on the main album, despite it being pretty solid overall. You get the feeling, listening to songs like Dead Letters, that they have so much potential if they'd just cut loose and let their songwriting evolve a little bit more... but on songs like Leech and Ambitions, they just revert back to the 'soft verse, heavy, crunchy chorus' cliche that's almost starting to get a bit tiring for me. But then I get a breath of fresh air like the track above, and am reminded that they do still have new things to say - you just don't hear it from them as much anymore. Doesn't prevent me from enjoying the new album; just makes me wish they pushed themselves a little bit more... because then we might really have a masterpiece on our hands.

I think they elected to go more atmospheric with this album, and I approve.

I like it more than the last two, but Viva Emptiness is still my favorite.

Weird, I've just been listening to The Real Thing and had to listen to Surprise! You're Dead! over and over. :guitar:
