Talk about other artists here (even though they all rip off Meshuggah)

The new Mastdon album. It's fuckin awesome. I agree not as good as Crack the Skye, but I think I will forever see that as the pinnacle of Mastodon's career. However this one is lots of fun, good kicking tunes. Love it.

I agree partially. I see why Crack the Skye gets so much love and I love it too. But a few songs were just too long and didn't really go anywhere, in my opinion. On The Hunter you got much shorter songs, yeah and they might not be as crazy and proggy but they are much more 'fun'. Plus you got some surprisingly different songs on The Hunter. Some might say that's a bad thing but I think it's good when bands try something different. And I think they again improved their vocals on this one. There were still a few songs on Crack the Skye where the vox were not really all that great, to say the least :P

Troy does fine on vocals, it's Brent that cannot sing to save his life, but the studio helps out alot. Seeing them live is another thing,

I'm 99% positive that Brett Hinds is addicted to crack.

Edit: I was at that infamous Oakland show.

I'm fucking LOVING Mastodon's new album. I really hated them up until I heard Oblivion, and they just keep getting better! I never expected my second favorite album of the year s o far to be a Mastodon album. (First being the Decon/Ghost combo)

Just heard Tom Wait's second single for the new album. It's sounding like it's gonna be one badass album!

Curious, what infamous Oakland show?
And while it's clear those guys enjoy the comsumption of drugs, I'm not so clear on their personal choices..

Well he does seem to be the least stable member of that band.
When I saw them he was ok, but he really could not sing any line, he would just try to vocalize sounds similar to the lyrics.

Yeah, Brent's nuts, but he's also a funny fucker. And I think it's an unfortunate thing all Mastodon fans have to just embrace, the band can't sing live-- Troy or Brent, IMO. Honestly I think they should have Brann sing more, I think he's the best in the bunch, and the most down to earth one to boot. Their vocals sound good on record and their live show is still awesome despite the vocals so I don't really care.

Loving Dry Bone Valley, The Creature Lives (the THX part at the beginning is way cool), and Blasteroids, aside from the singles already released, of course.

So I've got a hold of The Hunter too and I'm a few tracks in.

It's great! Focused, catchy and as mentioned the songs don't wander aimlessly for too long. They've done crazy proggy stuff before where they pick a groove and sit on it for 17 minutes. Why do it yet again? Eg on other albums Curl the Burl would have had several pointless breaks and another huge solo (I LOVE Brent's solos, but there's a time and a place). As it is it's a catchy little song with a killer groove that stops just when you want a bit more - perfect!

And yeah, Brann should just sing everything live. Troy and Brent sound fine with the studio behind them, but from the footage I've seen of their live stuff, it just aint happening. Maybe if Brent stopped being batshit insane and on industrial strength drugs and alcohol his ability to actually perform would improve. The band would most definitely fall apart without Brann. Mighty fine drummer also.

Yep, I too have just dug into Mastodon's "The Hunter". Man, I love it :D . So groovy, melodic and downright heavy. Personally I was never one for Mastodon. I don't mind Leviathan and Crack the Skye, but everything else does nothing for me. I don't know, they are slowing growing onto me. They seem to be that band that improves more in their style over time.

I've also been listening to Machine Head's new album "Unto The Locust".

Yeah, its not bad. Some tasty riffwork and leads. Definitely not something that'll outmatch The Blackening imo. It is good that they're getting on track with their musical direction and not doing what they did with Supercharger. Overall, its a nice aggresive record to listen to when the mood's right 8) .
