Talk about other artists here (even though they all rip off Meshuggah)

Parts & Labor. Some indie or experimental rock, whatever rock, with some bits of electro here and there, sounds pretty good. Sophisticated enough not to be boring, light enough not to be draining.

more like Mikael fell into a 70s prog rock hole and will never come out.

It's completely different, and I happened to grow up listening to a lot of that sort of stuff so I surely do not mind.

Never was a huge Opeth fan anyway, though, I like them okay.

Not to pass premature judgment on Heritage, but I'm worried, to say the least. That may sound stupid, but I love Opeth... I think they haven't made an outright average/mediocre/rehashed/poor album yet, but the way The Devil's Orchard sounds, Heritage might be the first. I'm all for them exploring their softer side, and leaving their metal influences behind (Mikael can't keep screaming forever), and there's a massive amount of potential for what could come of it. However... the way all the interviews and press releases have left me feeling is as if Heritage is some kind of 70s tribute album; not an Opeth album proper. The aforementioned new single borrowing ridiculous amounts of ideas from Watershed doesn't help matters either, and I loved Watershed - balls-out prog rock parts and all. It's interesting how Steven Wilson is paying tribute to his 70s influences too, with Grace for Drowning (which comes just days after Heritage), and yet the previews for that sound absolutely fantastic. I think there's a fine line between sounding inspired by something, versus influenced by something... and I think Steven sounds inspired; Opeth, influenced.

Come September, though, we'll really see, won't we?

Anyways... I'm just overly passionate about both artists. As for what's pleasuring my ears right now:

Terrible that more people haven't heard this, because these guys are incredible. They're a blend of Periphery, Dream Theater and Meshuggah, with their own flavors in thrown in as well...

I cannot believe there is someone else here who isn't a huge Opeth fan - thanks for allowing me to not feel so alone.

Here? Try my household, that's like the one band the other three guys can agree on, and while I certainly don't mind em, I own Blackwater Park and that's it.

Incidentally the one band me and two of the three can agree on is Katatonia.

I can take or leave them. However, they're pleasant enough live...Just never really got into them either. Can't see this changing anytime soon by what I've heard off the upcoming album so far.

Anyway, now playing:

*raises hand*

I'd imagine there're quite a many of us that don't love Opeth... I only like their lighter stuff really. Stuff like Harvest, the two Patterns in the Ivy tracks or Damnation. Although I do like Morningrise, generally I find Akerfeldt's angry growly voice is a bit crappy and annoying.

I am currently listening to Prex singing Leonard Cohen's The Partisan. Tis only lovely.

I can't imagine how anyone could see an endless 70's prog hole as anything but a good thing.
