Talk about other artists here (even though they all rip off Meshuggah)

YEAAAAH!

I need more music like this! :D

Can I get a list of bands or something?

"Progressive" is such a broad term.

Go with Cloudkicker now, if you haven't already. Then get Periphery's instrumental album.

Cloudkicker I am familiar with but which one is Periphery's instrumental album?

Just the album they released earlier this year, but instrumental! They did it because a lot of their fans didnt care for the vocals and loved Misha's instrumental demos.

Cloudkicker is a bit monotonous though IMO, not as "sound-scape-ish" as Dev's music.

Currently listening to Philip Glass's Koyaanisqatsi, nice tunes, might get monotonous after a while too :P
I need to see the movie too.

Check this guy

Stealing axiom who are spamming fan projects section are cool as well. There's also Keith Merrow, he's a bit more straightforward metal, though.

I won't even ask about Tesseract :>

daneulephus wrote:Anthony, I'm surprised you like Chimp Spanner. His Vai influences are abundantly clear.

Maybe it's the down-tuned guitars and time sigs...

Or the fact that his music actually isn't complete wankery, and is well written.

Plus, down-tuned guitars aren't even a factor. Just about everyone knows two of my all time favorite bands are Opeth and Porcupine Tree. And before the last album, PT had really only gone to drop D.

I guess maybe I'm just old. I grew up in the 80's, and was immensely impressionable. When Vai came on the scene, it just rocked everyone's world, including mine. He is one of a kind. Shit, people wouldn't be playing 7-strings, or 8 for that matter if it weren't for him. He is a bit pompous yes, and loves the wank, but it's not all he does. Different strokes I suppose.

I said that because if you take away the down-tuned guitars and time sigs, the modes Chimp Spanner uses and the harmonic/melodic context are pure Vai...at least in that link you posted.

Istapp - Blekinge

Not sure if they're serious. A bit too much snow, frost and absolute freezing point grimness (all in swedish) plus weak production...but I like the epic bits. 8)
