Recording begins for Ghost

So Devin's started Ghost. As he's been saying on Twitter, for those who don't follow:

"First night of recording for ghost! It is in the process of deciding if it wants to be overwhelmingly beautiful or unexpectedly dark..."

"Yeah, I don't doubt it will be a bit of each, it's just getting the theme to allow each to compliment the other without being awkward."

"Yeah, it's like folky, country, new agey, beautiful and isolated, and there's something about the moon in it as well, it's rearing it's head"

He later said:

"Wow, Ghost is wonderful."

I was wondering what tracks would be on and I thought back to the acoustic gig where he played Kawaii, so I tweeted (Me = http://twitter.com/lodgedismantled ) at him "@dvntownsend Make sure Kawaii makes it on Ghost!" and he tweeted back, "@lodgedismantled yup, it is."

Having never had a tweet back from a semi famous person on twitter, I allowed myself to become quite excited at the idea of having semi contacted Devin. After this subsided, I thought I'd draw up a track list so far:

x. Kawaii

I didn't ask about the others but will Radial Highway be there? He played a few others, I wasn't there, I only watched them on YouTube. Looked like an awesome gig.

So far I think it might be like taking Ki, but playing it on the moon.

Thanks for posting this. Twitter tends to bore me, so I don't keep track of things.

My question is, will Devin perform any of the 'Ghost' tracks on his upcoming NA tour? I'd like to think he'll drop a couple of crumbs...

Awesome news! I'm still somewhat confused over the title Kawaii though... In Japanese "kawaii" (可愛い) means "cute", or in some contexts "charming, darling". Is this coincidence? Given Devin's affinity for Japanese stuff, such as the SYL track "Japan", the album title "Ki", the samples in "the Death of Music" etc, I have a hunch its intentional.

PS: this isn't just some word I picked up from anime or something, I've studied the language very hard for years!! - reading the Bend it Like Bender subs was cool 8)
Anyway, just curious! :)

I don't get how it couldn't be, it doesn't exactly have an English meaning. I've never been, but apparently in Japan kawaii is almost like a way of life for some people. Maybe that's got something to do with it, who knows. I remember in high school, our school hosted students from a Japanese school for two weeks of the year or so, and they always had the cutest handbags, keychains, clothing... lots of cartoony animals and the sort of thing we tend to associate with kawaii. Compared to over here, where adults who wear that sort of thing are viewed as kind of weird, so it's obviously a big part of their culture.

I always thought 'kawaii' was a spin on 'hawaii'. Apparently I was wrong.

Still, I am so psyched for Ghost it is not funny.
Actually it is.

Yeah, I remember meeting a Japanese girl I knew there and her car was full of Hello Kitty stuff, haha. I don't kmow about a way of life, but they do certainly like cute stuff a lot more than the rest of the world. Theres a lot of pressure on girls there to be and act "cute" as well, something which isn't really in the West. Anyway, sorry for being off topic!
Very excited for Ghost, I'm hoping it'll be a little like the So Be It videos on Dev's youtube.

Extremely excited...maybe even more excited than I am for Decon? Bah, who knows. Both will be great.

Looking forward to this too. I was watching Devy on Twitter as well and thought it was really nice reading his progression through the recordings. But it leaves me a little confused regarding the entire recording sessions for both albums. Is he recording both at the same time switching his time between the two albums? Or is Decon done? I remember him talking a lot about Decon then about how both albums would be out at the same time then now recording Ghost.

I wonder what happened... did I miss the tweet about Decon being completed?

no, I think he's still working on both.

re Ghost (Twitter):

Ghost seems like the music I should be making. The uncertanty of doing it came from it being a leap of faith. Mkes Ki seem like Death Metal.

This is also from Twitter for those who missed it:

@dvntownsend wrote:So I start the real recording of Ghost after Europe, finish before America, then Decon over holidays, then release them both in about March.

Yes yes, I remember now! Thanks for clearing it up. When I last posted it I thought it was the other way around that Devy was recording Decon before the America tour. Then suddenly all these posts about Ghost recordings caught me off guard.

Thanks a bunch.

Yeah, I was almost getting confused myself. I think it's cause he tweeted so much about Decon, then that stopped, and now it's all about Ghost, so we just assumed it was that way

God, I can't wait for BOTH albums. I wish they could come out sooner, but, hey, genius needs time (and breaks). Either way, I wasn't as excited for Ghosts before. I am now.
