Devin's Vocal Style

As we all know, Mr. Townsend has a massive vocal range, something that makes people like me green with envy...

Is there anything properly known about this, what his technique really is, and with that; how can I do those things?!

Hell if I know. I've been trying to sing Dev for years and all I can manage perfect is Thing Beyond Things. I can't do the scream though so I guess technically I can't do anything. I can almost do Stagnant but the gristle in "choke upon the bone" is just too much. @-@

How about a full-blown DVD?

I once read in an (old) interview (can't recall where it's from) that Devin just screamed until he felt something rip his throat.
You might as well try this.
But as far as ''clean'' singing goes...
Only Devin can tell. I'm pretty sure he doesn't know how the hell he's doin' it.
It must be natural to him, he must feel it more than he knows how to do it.

I don't dig advice that will damage people's vocal cords permanently.

Not to burst your bubble, but it's more genetics than technique.

I mean, he sang on a major-label rock album at 19. It's not like he has some secret method that no one else knows. Your throat, vocal chords, and head are shaped a certain way that determine what kind of pyrotechnics you can do with your voice. Some people can do it, some can't.

(Obviously it takes a ridiculous amount of practice and dedication, too. But practice alone isn't going to get you there.)

Please disregard this.

Plus he was in the school choir, so he started singing pretty damn early.

As a singer myself, the best advice I can give is...
JUST SING!!!

Of course it's a very bad idea to do that.
I wouldn't try it myself. I'm just reporting what Devin said in an interview (which was probably a joke of some sort)

I recall some time back that Tracy mentioned Devin worked quite hard on his vocals - he was unsure if his voice was up to what he wanted to do, or something along these lines.

Genetics would most certainly play a major part - my voice is NEVER going to be powerful or controlled in any meaningful way, despite my being a decent little boy soprano until testosterone came along and yanked me by the short and curlies. But from all I've heard Dev and others say, training can also be of benefit, and looking after the pipes also helps (see Dev's stronger-and-cleaner-than-ever voice sans the weed).

So I'd say the obvious starting point (if you don't do this already) would be to source a good vocal teacher.

Having a good voice is genetics but being a good singer is practice. It's like any other muscle of the body and gets stronger through exercise. "Just sing" is probably the best advice and getting your breathing right is very important.
