Hi all. Would be grateful for a nudge in the right direction. Am pretty new to the music, with only knowledge of the Vai stuff and the tune 'Bastard'. What is the best entry level album?

Personally, I would suggest Terria as that was my introduction to Dev outside of SYL. It balances his gentler side with his progressive, and at times extreme, sensibilities. It's also an addictive (no pun intended) album to listen to. Ocean Machine, from which Bastard comes, is less gentle but also gives you great insight into his mind and sound.

For SYL I'd suggest Alien or City. I find that the later records were aggressive but in control and still accessible, where the first two were balls-out chaos. With that said, City was the more focused of the two.
