Has this been discussed before?

Pledgemusic would in my opinion be the right way for Dev to release his albums. He has mentioned on several occasions that he really doesn

I can understand he'd get little return on the actual album sales. But, if Dev's losing money from touring, why is he on tour approximately 4-5 months a year? I doubt it's to get rid of all his excess money...

I also doubt you can make a decent living with these pledge-projects. As I see them they're more to cover the costs of recording/mixing/mastering/producing an album (or whatever sort of project), not a reliable source of income.

Also, currently NorthernMusic is Dev's management (represented on this board by Jasper); I think InsideOut only handles the distribution (in Europe), not the marketing/promoting side of things.

My understanding is that distributors do indeed have to fund the marketing/promoting. It wouldn't make sense for some other unconnected party to do that or the distributors could be left with stockpiles of unsold albums.

Devin wouldn't be nearly as successful at it as Ginger is, I'm afraid. Ginger has a tad more fan support, and his goals aren't as grand as Dev's. Devin auctions guitar on eBay and they go for $2,000-$5,000. Ginger auctioned a guitar that sold for $17,000. As supportive of Dev as we fans are, Ginger can bring in a lot more money. Devin needs the label and management's support to do the things he needs to do right now. Stuff like the "By A Thread" shows or Retinal Circus could not happen. If he is able to get more exposure and start selling more tickets and albums worldwide, then it may be something he could consider.
