Funny, I once had a completely opposite experience. Ordered a t-shirt, online shop they were by American Apparel. I picked a medium as usual. When it arrived, it turned out that American Apparel's idea of the size M was much smaller than the usual Fruit of the Looms and the like. Or at least that style of t-shirt AA made was like that: Not too small to wear, but more form-fitting than I like my shirts. Next time I ordered an L and that was almost exactly the size as the vast majority of medium sizes I've come across. The shop didn't mention the sizes being on the small side back then, but they now seem to have added a mention of that.
