Also, lol @ the clicktrack during By Your Command. :D

I think RVP actually fucks up on the first set of double kicks in BYC. I'll check the MP3 now for a time............... right at 0:05-0:07 it just doesn't sound right especially when it is repeated about 2 seconds later. Either way RVP was tight as fuck that night.

He has to be a god damned beast if he can play Ziltoid in its entire. There are some insane drum patterns there.

Ha, you're right, sounds a bit like a triplet. :) Still, to play BYC/Ziltoid like he does is something I think only few drummers are able to pull off. Amazing to listen to.

I'm not sure why this is considered a "fuck up". Just because it's not identical to the album version at that moment, doesn't mean it's evidence of a mistake. It's obviously just what he felt like doing that night. The fact that he repeated it a few seconds later suggests he knew exactly what he was doing. I know you're not trying to put him down or anything, but it just seems like a strange observation to make considering how all live musicians tend to change things up a bit from time to time either to keep it interesting or just because that was the improvisation they chose to do in the moment.
I don't know if any of you have the blu-ray/dvd of "Metallica: Francais Pour Une Nuit" where they played this show in Nimes, France back in 2009 (an incredible venue, btw), but in the bonus features, Rob Trujillo talks about how Lars always puts different "accents" on his drum playing, meaning that it changes from night-to-night in subtle, but interesting ways. Playing as many shows as they have, those little moments would become very noticeable to the band, I would imagine, but not necessarily to the majority of the audience. Anyway, just thought I'd mention it as I think that's all RVP is doing here, instead of making a mistake.

I should have said it was a slip and what I meant is the pattern is repeated only 2 seconds later but he actually plays what is on the album while at 0:05-0:07 it is slightly different. It was late last night so I was too tired to properly make myself clear.

RVP is a hell of a drummer to be able to pull those songs off from Ziltoid. I have a tendency to dominantly listen to the drums while out walking or at the gym and Devy just went over the top with the drums on that album. I would like to hear the soundboard recording of the Tuska Ziltoid performance. RVP must have destroyed Ziltoidia Attaxxx.

I agree. RVP is a great drummer and a hell of a nice guy. Plus, he had big shoes to fill after the long-term collaboration between Dev and Gene. For RVP to be the guy who basically has to play anything Dev has ever done is a huge task.
I have heard musicians actually fuck up though. I remember seeing Down in 2008; they were playing some song and suddenly Phil stopped the band playing. He had a quiet word with Jimmy Bower on drums who had somehow skipped the next verse and started playing the pattern for the next pre-chorus. Phil announced that Jimmy had fucked it up and they were going to start again! I've never seen anyone do that, but it was really cool and nobody cared. That's a band who wants to make sure you get your money's worth! :guitar:

Oh man, this EP sounds awesome! Thank you very much Devin & Brett.

Great to hear a Ziltoid track with live drums in soundboard quality. Seriously oustanding production (and musicianship, as expected) on these tracks.

I wish a band like Iron Maiden would release studio albums in such a sound quality (The Final Frontier was a huge letdown sound-wise for me, and apparently for Adrian Smith, too). Imagine the latest Maiden album with a production by Jens Bogren.

Where is Sir Ryan nowadays? Haven't seen him posting on this board for quite some time, but I was mostly MIA around here for a couple of years as well.
Anyway, GREAT drumming, Ryan!

You did a great job with this, Brett.

I think the problem with a lot of live albums is that the ones mixing and producing try and make it sound more live. Instead of taking a soundboard recording and mixing it in a way that optimizes the quality like Brett did, they tend to tweak it in a way so it sounds less than studio quality. It's like they try very hard to distinguish a live sounding record from a studio record by making the live sound not quite as good. Plus, the more noise they create in the live mix, the easier it is to hide the studio overdubs later. Don't forget about adding the "ambience."

I'd rather hear a good quality mix of a live show, including whatever fuck-ups abound, than listen to a noisy, under-optimized recording that keeps trying to remind me that it was actually live. Yeah, I figured it was live. It said so on the cover. ;)

Brett wrote:You know, on most of the dates of that tour, the DTP had a LOT of fans there, and had equal success to BTBAM or Cynic, if not more in some places and for those who didn't know Devin, they left a big big impression (according to everyone who talked to me after the shows). Shows that "sucked" for Dev were shows that sucked for the other bands too... And the sound of the EP doesn't do justice to the heaviness and power of the live performance. Believe me, it was heavy as fuck! Heavy as... a really heavy thing? ;)

This is a really enjoyable listen. Well mixed and an excellent performance. Not to be finicky but would you mind sharing a lossless version? It would eliminate those pesky gaps (esp. Truth>Om) and I would love to hear the mix in better sq.

Regardless, thanks.
