It's a little scary, actually!

The more I try to sing, the more I think I should actually go see a vocal-instructor. I really don't want to mess my voice up with improper techniques. What think ye?

You might be able to hit them, but to sing the song in its entirety is very different. If you can do that, then you're just a good singer. I can also hit the high notes, but I sure as fuck can't sing.

Screaming puts more of a strain on your.. everything, but it's not really fair to count it as part of a single vocal range. People can be TERRIBLE singers with VERY little range, but excellent screamers.

I used to sing-along with everything, but then I read something on a singing forum that emulating/copying your favorite singers wasn't good for your voice.

Now I listen to audiobooks in the car :(

EDIT: listening to the mighty masturbator right now and want do nothing more than sing-along :( I don't think my girlfriend would be pleased to be woken up by Devin. She's not a a very big Devy fan. The only compliment I've gotten out of her was that she thinks he sounds like he belongs in a Disney movie (listening to Storm) Ahh, well. No one is perfect. :shithorse:

That's weird, I think that is how Devin learned to sing. I think he once said this on Formspring 'singing along with Skid Row albums in the car'. Or something like that.

It seems that most of the screams Devin does, are his falsetto voice combined with a very large scream distortion (some like to call it 'fry')

They might like to call it "fry" but they really shouldn't - I prefer the term "rasp". Vocal fry has a very specific meaning and it has little to do with the high screams Devin does.

See "The Vocal Fry Epidemic": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsE5mysfZsY

Tbh, I'd love to know if there's any way you can be taught to produce the tonality Devin produces for his screams 'cos I seem to be stuck with an irritatingly clean voice right across my range, though I think the choral society I sing with would prefer it if I kept it that way :D

It's the very first lyric section. "I. I wonder."

Yep, although I checked with Guitar Pro to determine the notes.

He also mentioned working at a restaurant and going into the freezer to practice singing/screaming.

As a rule of thumb it's a good idea but it's not an absolute truth. The problem is that everyone's voice is subtly different so it's easy to end up stretching your voice in terms of pitch or end up mashing your vocal chords together to try and emulate someone else's natural tone.

There's no reason not to sing along with your favourite singers, you just have to be careful to stay true to your own voice in terms of tone and pay attention to your technique if what you're singing along to is challenging in terms of pitch.

The hardest thing to cope with, I find, is when a singer has a much higher voice than your own and can be singing in full chest voice at notes that are right in your chest->head passaggio. It's instinctive, and potentially damaging, to want to sing the notes in the same register as the singer.

In the live version of Kingdom it sounds like Dev starts on a G5, and ends up on A5. Are my ears correct?

Nope, that's a G4/A4 he's singing. Scientific pitch notation switches on the C and those notes are between middle C (C4) and the next one up (C5).

Thanks for the advice and the correction. Much appreciated :)
