not long after releasing the 4 very different DTP albums, he seems to be doing it again with epicloud, Z2 & casualties of cool. i'm sure we all know this is nothing new for the dev, but i've never really thought about just how consistent a concept this is. i've recently been listening to all dev related releases in order of release just for the hell of it and thought i'd share this with you guys. nearly all his albums came out as 2 (or more) drastically different albums a year.

City Feb 11 1997 / Ocean Machine - July 21 1997

No Sleep till Bedtime June 2 1998 / Infinity - June 17th 1998

Physicist June 26 2000 / Ass-sordid Demos 2000

SYL Feb 11 2003 / Accelerated Evolution March 31 2003

For Those Aboot to Rock 2004 / Devlab Dec 4 2004 / Ass-sordid Demos II 2004

Synchestra Jan 30 2006 / The New Black July 11 2006 / The Hummer Nov 15th 2006

Ki May 22 2009 / Addicted Nov 17th 2009

Decon & Ghost June 20th 2011

again, nothing groundbreaking and I was definetely aware of it before but never put too much thought into it until now. I remember reading a few reviews around when Alien came out and he said it was an outlet to get aggression out while writing Synchestra and something very similar during SYL/AE.

There's absolutely something there. If I'm not mistaken, SYL and AE were even recorded during the same sessions. And Synchestra was initially called Human, intended to represent the counterpart to Alien (they were planned to be released around the same time, but then Synchestra was delayed a bit, IIRC).

that is correct, i remember reading devy's updates on the forum when synchestra was still tentatively called Human (i've always considered those albums as 2 parts that make up a whole). He's also stated that he didn't have as much involvement in the writing process of SYL since he was focused more on AE. Just thought it was cool that the release dates each year always coincide with 1 heavy and one lighter release. but yea to be more accurate and disregard what year they came out, each album and it's polar opposite could read:

heavy as a real heavy thing / punky bruster
city / ocean machine
SYL / AE
alien / synchestra
new black / ziltoid (maybe, but ziltoid is pretty heavy). could be: new black / hummer

I've always thought about it that way actually.
I read in a pretty old interview that Infinity was the missing part of the OM/City trinity.
I would even dare say that you could pair Physicist with Terria.
