Quite recently I've been delving back into the world of non-distorted guitar tones and as much as I love it, I have sometimes found it to be sounding empty or a little bare.

So I've decided the time has come to branch out from my simplistic overdrive and wah pedals and move into the realms of reverb, chorus and delay.

The sound I'd really like to aim for in terms of cleans is most like the clean sections in Isis' work, that kind of shimmering sound I suppose you could call it, I did a bit of research and found that besides loops and overdrives, the only other pedals finding their way on to their boards are reverbs.

I was just wondering if a reverb pedal would be the way to go in this case, or am I terribly mistaken?

probably a chorus pedal first for an Isis sound

Just listening to some of their clean parts, it sounds like both-- most of the time it just seems to be a bit of reverb to sweeten the sound a bit, but I'm hearing chorus in addition to that in some parts too. I'm sure you could find an effects pedal with both reverb and chorus build in. The 'shimmering' sound most likely just comes from running a clean bridge pickup (single coil?), though. That's what it sounds like to me, at least.

Ah right, I thought a tinge of chorus may come into it but I wasn't sure, I must admit that it isn't my area of expertise (that is if I even have one haha).

hmmm, they can sound a bit synthetic sometimes though. i use its software for my line 6 toneport. its fine for recording but hooking it up to an amp makes it seem a bit... fake. if you get yourself some stompboxes youll never need to buy those effects again

Sybreed's guitarist uses (used?) old POD pro live, that's rack version of POD 2.0. I've seen them playing and they sounded way better than other bands with shiny mesas playing before them. They also recorded both of their albums with same old POD, guitars on them sound great if you ask me.

Oh, and Porcupine Tree's Deadwing is all Line6. That's one sweet sounding record.

POD's can sound so good if done right. I absolutely love my tones. The cleans are out of this world, the distortions are more defined and heavier than almost any other modeler i've used. Meshuggah uses Line 6 Vetta II's which are basically POD X3's with a preamp built in. Their live sound is great, their sound on obZen and I are both great.

Line 6 has good shit!

Oh, and I have a toneport. It's good for recording if you just want to track some stuff, but it doesnt hold up against a POD for quality.

Line 6 do do some great stuff, I know their delay pedal is pretty tasty (sounded like that to me anyway haha) but I don't know, I've never been a fan of the amps they do though the Vettas are awesome.

The distortions are pretty good but I don't like the clean tones, a bit tinny I suppose, that's what I got when I tried out some of their amps, another problem of mine, a new amp somewhere down the line, its becoming an expensive christmas!!!

But that's another story
