I'm using some digital distortion, because when my amp goes through the headphones it sounds like the worst thing in history, and all of my distortion plugins don't seem to do the trick very well for that sound I want =[.

i dont know anything about this kinda stuff and sounds a bit dodgy to me... but you could look at getting a virtual amp effect unit for your computer recording and playing.

iZotope Trash.
I use the entire iZotope suite (Ozone, Trash, Spectron, and Vinyl), I don't know what I'd do without it. Oh wait... I'd probably just do slightly shittier sounding productions.

I've used a few before in Tools, and their great if you dont want a metal sound, but i hate them, i hate them like i hate shit being smeard on my face. i'd try and stay totally clear of them!! i say amp+mic=sex

It's easy for you to say that, since your amp isn't bad =P. have you ever had a 15 watt amp called a "BB Blaster" that literally takes the piss out of itself by calling it's dials "beef" or "tweak" or "zap", along with having the most terrible, muddy guitar tone that you could possibly get out of an amp that small? I don't know ANYONE with a worse amp than mine =P, and to actually do anything and make it sound good I need a plugin.

Actually, the amp I use is a shitty little Fender Frontline 15 watt with a broken speaker, using an even shittier tiny-ass Yamaha 'G10' 10 watt beater as a speaker, lined through the headphone jack of the Fender. The amps sound shitty on their own, but somehow, together they sound great. I've used the combo for just about everything I've recorded.

hmm, I may have to show you the "Useless Guitar Lesson" I put on youtube to show you how horrible my tone is. I'm hoping to get a line 6 and get something recorded so I can have SOME sort of "guitar" tone for the next album I do, if I ever get round to doing anything, considering I the most amount of time I have to think up and record anything is a 2 hour slot in between everything else I have to do and sometimes the odd half hour one =P.

Haha, well, on my demos, everything is digital, there is actually no real frequencys there, i ran it straight through my digital effects pedal straight into tools, thats why i call em demos, coz i dont really spend that much time on them and try and do everything as quickly as possible. Have you tried just pushing the distortion on the plugins , then just using a nice EQ on them? like i use focusrite ones....once i pulld a mean sound from a crappy practice amp, say if you micd it up in a corner, or in a sort of cubboard/closet sized room, have it facing the door, i used 2 57's and a sonyC48 for a room mic (i doubt you could get one of those tho! i dont have access to them anymore too*sob*) all in all it was all micd up in a little room like 4x4foot, the amp was low so you didnt really 'know' what it was...well it sounded better, but yeah, it sux being in a situation like that. Also my amp is a FenderPro 185, 185watt, combo 12". and yes, it has balls the size of elephants.

185 watt...that's not fair =[, but do you have a seven string guitar tuned to A that you can actually get a note out of! =D

although it might help if I could get a decent note out of the seventh string =/, meh, either way, are you and your partner walking on an album? cos I'll gladly have it =D. I'm saving up to buy a few people's albums on this site, one being josiah tobin's Borerer and Knorke Suedfrucht's (or Ike's) ...erm...album xD.

ahh well my 7 string is an ESP, i've seen Loomus (nevermore) use the same one heaps but he has thos emg707s (bastard)! i dunno man, i guess yeah its a mix of everything to get a decent sound then, something that we shall forever be on a quest for i think.

mate as soon as i finish my demo i'll send you a copy for free, i do everything myself, i just started writing with this other guy but we have only come up with a few ideas together, i'm just constantantly doing my own demos and sequencing drums for too many hours!!

Yeah, distortion straight out of a pedal into your recorder is always, always going to sound like shit. It's because guitar speakers' frequency response rolls off significantly after about 2khz and is usually almost gone by 5khz.

I have a PODxt Live and a Korg AX300G... the latter can more easily create fuller, but slightly more plastic tones (think the beginning of Judgement)... the POD is geared more toward "classic" tones but you can squeeze metal out of it. I can post presets for either if you like.

I tend not to like software modelers because for one, I think they've got too much of a tweakability factor, I spend more time programming than playing, and they never end up sounding right. Secondly I prefer playing with effects into my recorder, even though I know this means down the line I may have to re-record them if my tone improves.

I need to start splitting my signal so I record dry and wet at the same time in case I improve my settings and then I can re-amp. But I have gotten some sick tones out of the POD.

That being said, I have a friend who recorded a lot of the rhythm tracks on his new album with Trash. We both love it. You have to be the kind of person who really really knows in advance what it's going to sound like and be able to do it clean into your computer.

amplitube is cool for noodling around

but recording i always use my line 6 amp

and it's nice to see someone else use the korg ax300g, i got it ages ago and it's come invaluable over the years
