yeah i have been reading about how alien was tuned to G aswell as some parts of synchestra.
Just wondering, did they tune the bass guitar to go that low relative to the guitar as well?!
What gauge string would let the bass go to G!?

On Alien bass was tuned down to E (octave lower), at least for one song. I think Byron speaks about it on the miniDVD that came with Alien, but I can't check it out right now, so ... anyone?

However, I think when he said that he was recording the booms in Info Dump. Yeah, I've tried tuning the bass down to A, even then its really undefinable...

No doubt he was using a 5-string though. I don't think you can get an E string that is that thick. Find a B string. It'd have to be thicker than like, 140.

'Possessions' is the song that's tuned down to E.

go there, and scroll down to Special Strings Power Steel singles, on the right hand side, below 4 string sets
they offer a 195 and a 165

whoa
nice find dude!
i've just started tuning to A and regular low B strings are okish.
Wouldn't mind trying a .195 just for the fun of it tho
at 34US$ youd be pissed off to break it.
I need a subwoofer first tho to make best use of it.

Yup, I play a Conklin GTBD-7 tuned F#BEADGC with a .165 on the F#. You HAVE to have the right sub (not necessarily just big enough to replicate the frequency but also with a quick enough response not to mud up on faster more 'metal' passages') to produce the fundamental properly.
