I don't know if this has been asked before, but does anyone know what effects Dev used on the GP-100 for Ocean Machine and perhaps even an approximation of the settings of said effects? I hear delay, reverb, most likely a bit of chorus, and some other effect that is driving me crazy as I can't tell what it is. It sounds like a very slight auto-wah at the beginning of each picked note, but it's really hard to tell. The phantom effect is also quite prominent on Sit In The Mountain (Christeen/Infinity EP) and various other songs. Any help would be appreciated as I've been trying, in vain, for over a year now to emulate the Ocean Machine sound. I've also been trying to reproduce the clean electric sound in Noisy Pink Bubbles, starting around 1:09 when it gets all moody. Damn I love that part. I'm going to go listen to it now.

I have no idea how Dev makes such uncharacteristic guitar sounds. I guess that's what makes him Dev. Just his TONE distinguishes his songs from everyone else.

I can get a halfway-decent Ocean Machine tone with my PodXT, but I'm unfamiliar with this GP-100 unit. As for effects, I use quite a bit of delay, a tiny hint of chorus, and some verb; nothing too fancy. If you want some specific info on the preset, lemme know.
I think the other thing you're hearing is due to string gauge, believe it or not. It's sort of a "Bwow Bwow Bwow" that you get with looser strings; they start out a little sharp, and then quickly resolve to pitch, and it does sort of have a subtle auto-wah effect. I noticed it when I was messing around to Seventh Wave; I keep my guitar tuned to B, and I got that "Bwow" thing, but when I tuned up to C to match the song, thus picking up the slack on my strings, I lost it.

You can use the "Boston lead" patch...which mods in eq settings, turning down the chorus a bit, tweeking the delay & of corse, compression compression compression! I also recomment switching the amp model to either the 5150 or the overdrive-2

Here's the thing: I'm running my gp-100 through my 5150. So, I have no need for a preamp setting in the gp-100. I'm curious why you're so insistent on compression. It doesn't really affect the tone unless you go in and actually change the tone setting in the compression section. As far as I know, all compression does is make sure the volume is more consistent across the frequency spectrum. Thanks for the input, though.

Sort of, but only if one particular frequency jumps out. If the sound is fairly balanced as far as frequency goes, compression essentially just smooths out the amplitude (well, depending on attack/release times of said compressor- I won't go into that right now). Unless we're talking about multiband compression, that is. Then the 'frequency' thing can be more applicable, in a way.
I don't really know if compression before the amplifier is really a component of this sound (aside from the "natural" compression inherent in overdriving an amplifier), but there's definitely been quite a bit of compression added across the mix during mastering, and more than likely some on the individual guitar tracks (post-amp, albeit) as well. Some people do swear by compression stompboxes though, so I could be wrong here, but I hear a fairly dynamic guitar sound in this case, without the tell-tale 'pumping' or 'brickwall effect' of lots and lots of compression.

well if you are running the gp-100 merely as a processor then you might not need as much compression, though it does help, smooth out the chorus a tad bit. Devin uses the gp-100 by it's self though as a pre-amp/processor when he does.

hey i actually have a GP 100! unfortunately i havent played my electric guitar in like, 3 years... only accoustic.

i personally think that its a little tough to get a desired sound with that thing. It's a better amp modeler than an effects pedal.

How do you know this? Has he stated this somewhere on the forum? Are you also saying he doesn't use the Lead channel of the 5150 at all and only uses the Rhythm channel? Because I swear I read that he does use the Lead channel. Maybe this is more trouble than it's worth.

We had a discussion about it in the past. He uses the gp-100 for leads & ambient effetcs, D.I. & he "used" the 5150 for rhythm stuff. Not lead as much. Now he used the mesa instead of the 5150. You can hear the gp-100 all over the new dev album. D.I. especially in notes to aferica & vampira. The Gp-100 is best coupled as a pre-amp/processor combination. Really isn't the best idea to use as just a processor, tends to feed back a bit much.

By "D.I.", do you mean direct in, or something else? Also, I haven't heard a single thing from Synchestra and I'd like to keep it that way, so please don't mention any specific details regarding any of the songs. I want it to be a completely blank slate the first time I pop the CD in.

I merely give the details, how you use them is on you.
D.I. stands for direct input, or direct in. He sends the singal into a d.i. box from the Gp-100 & there are a couple thigns that sound as though they were recorded sterio juxtapose mono on the new album.
