First off I am a guitar player. But I like to mess around on drums and tapping away on my drum machine or keyboard, plus i am not in a band so when I record a song i have to play the drums.

So my problem is when I am drumming, my right hand that is playing the ride or high hat follows my kick drum when the kick plays a beat thats not on a beat where a ride is. I hope i am explaining myself well, if I knew how to write drum tab i would. Anyway is there anything to practice to get my ride more independant of my kick? It will really help my air drumming while I am in the car :) it seams like the same thing that happens when I play (try to play) piano, i cant play left and right hand indepenently.

Thanks in advance,
SMD

p.s.
not a problem when I am recording, I just record my ride/hh on a seperate track ;)

Hey there,

Ive been drumming for years but never had this problem... It sounds like something as simple as a lack of real practice. Some people naturally do this (one limb just follows the other), Im afraid the only answer is to reak it down and do lots of practice - dont try and run before you can walk though, it'll just get frustrating.

If you can play guitar you must have reasonable coordination - but it doesnt necessarily translate to your feet...!

Good luck - keep trying, it'll come eventually.

I have the same problem!!! Mainly because I've never owned a kit so I only occasionally have a chance to practice at a friends house and most of the time it's basically air drumming.

I have a question too - I want to buy a kit but given my level of expertise (or lack of it) don't need a Mike Portnoy kit or anything at this stage!!!

I assume a 5-piece kit would suffice? What should I be looking for that's sort of a starting kit but not a complete piece of shit either with enough there for me to develop my skills?

How the hell do you air-drum with kick in a car? Seems like it might bring up either hilarious or dangerous situations (or both...).

So when you see a car driving my accelerating in a rythmic pattern, VROOOOM.... VROOOM! you know it's SuperMegaDope

well it was a lot harder when I used to drive a stick, but im driving and automatic these days and I play kick drum with my left foot, so it really not that hard at all. Tap my right ring finger on the wheel at 2 oclock for my ride, and my left ring finger at 6 oclock on the wheel for a snare. i couldnt imagine my comute without air drums :) ...welll only on stern commercials ;)

Problems like these can only be solved through practice. It's something every beginning drummer suffers of, I think. Give it some time and effort and you'll be fine.

Damnit, thats not what i wanted to hear, I was hoping to hear "sure just do this little exercixe and youl be able to play like that in a few weeks" :)

I have been playin drums, (air/drum machine/real sets when i get the chance) for probably 15 years now , lol ...i guess i'll never be a drummer.

just now im at myy desk im listenin to deadhead and tappin away to the beat at 1:00 into the song (the main verse beat) , its a straight ride (1234) but when ever the kick does something like 2 quick hits together my ride wants to follow it, damnit its drivin me crazy....    :(

FACT: airdrumming can do miracles.
I havent played in over a year and i´m actually better than before, all because of airdrumming

just try and play along with stuff whenever you´re listening to it. And even on public places (obviously you can have a less retarded looking situation if you tap your toes and fingers lightly so no one can notice it :P)

Drumming is easy, it´s all about practice, so just keep that up ;)

[edit]

and btw, about the car-drumming thing, i´m actually afraid of driving listening to music because of that

I used to have this problem too (I am also a guitar player that started playing drums recently), but you get over it with practise, so just keep at it! :)

The best part is when you get some open highway with no traffic and you can set the cruise control and play some double bass

I took a job doing sales recently, there was a LOT of driving involved. I think I may have gotten past my independence problems with my ride/high hat and my kick, I guess practice makes perfect. I will have to do a lot more practicing, but I just took another job back in corporate america doing my boring IT work so I wont be practicing as much again :( but the moneys GREAT ;)
