A guy called Mike Riggs. Also, it seems that Mark Matcho and Danny Lohner played some guitar parts on the album.

Mike Riggs hasn't done anything big, other than Hellbilly Deluxe and The Sinister Urge with Rob Zombie. Danny Lohner seems to be a guitarist for Nine Inch Nails. No info about Mark Matcho anywhere. I guess he's a studio session guitarist.

Riggs was decent. No J. Yuenger though. J had such a great guitar sound on Astrocreep 2000.

Lohner was the; Bassist, (secondary) keyboardist and occasional second or third guitar for the live version of NIN from '94(... I think) until the end of the Fragility 2.0 tour in 2002. Very good musician. :) Did some soundtrack work for a semi-recent movie... can't remember which...

My personal picks for best tones:
The Dev- Terria and City; easily my favourite tones from him, ever.

Dino Cazares- Demanufacture; awesome tone... especially considering he was using a 6-string in tunings that low at the time.

Dave Mustaine- Rust in Peace; very raw, very mean tone. Perfect for the album.

John Christ- Danzig II: Lucifuge; ranging from full, Sabbath-esque distortion to over-distorted Blues, John Christ is the man when it comes to Blues Metal.

Greg Hetson & Brian Baker- Bad Religion: The Gray Race; very nice, very raw tone. Suits the punk they play very well, and while I don't think they change their rig much, this album is one of my favourites.

Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, & Janick Gers- Iron Maiden: A Matter Of Life And Death; every single song has the perfect sound for the mood and what it's about.

Larry "Ler" Lalonde- Primus: Sailing the Seas of Cheese; an odd choice, but I love it anyway.

Denis "Piggy" D'Amour- Voivod: Voivod; not necessarily their most musically complex release, but his playing on this is incredible regardless, and his tone is one of my favourites.

Alex Lifeson- Rush: 2112; Anyone who argues, go listen to "A Passage To Bangkok", or all 20-someodd minutes of the title track, and shut up.

Huh? That doesn't make any sense. You can tune a 6 stringer as low as any 7 string guitar, as long as you've got a heavy enough string guage.

That said.. Dino used a fairly light guage string for his tuning, that was part of his sound though.

Crowbar use 6 string guitars in B and Drop A-tuning, which is pretty low. 13 - 56 guage strings, i believe.

yes! Geordies hollow body is awesome. its got such a fat sound but gives breathing space for other instruments. especially the bass

Truth.
Geordie probably has the most unique guitar tone in rock, next to Brian May's 'Red Special'.

Wow, the almighty tone question...

Well, first of all ofcourse I like Dev's sound, but not on everything. Ocean Machine is one of my favourites, together with Terria. I love the Telecaster sound with high-gain.
John Petrucci is also one of my favourites, especially on the newer records. I just wish he'd turn his chorus off when playing live :P
Let's see, the guitar sound on Metallica's Load, is also really nice.
Meshuggah's guitar sound, especially live, wow!
And last but not least, Mike Landau and Shawn Lane, great guitarplayers and an even better sound!
